k: knit

  • Gauge
  • 1. Gauge is 18 stitches and 29 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch, blocked.
  • 2. Note: Maintain three-stitch garter border at beginning and end of every row. Color 1 stitch markers are placed to mark increases that are worked every fourth row inside borders and between four shawl sections. Color 2 stitch markers are placed to mark lace patterns centered in each section. Slip markers on all rows unless otherwise instructed.
  • Shawl
  • 1. Cast on 3 stitches.
  • 2. Row 1 (RS): Kfb, k1, kfb. You now have 5 stitches.
  • 3. Rows 2, 4, and 6 (WS): Knit.
  • 4. Row 3: Kfb, k3, kfb. You now have 7 stitches.
  • 5. Row 5: Kfb, k5, kfb. You now have 9 stitches.
  • 6. Row 7: K3, (yo, k1) three times, yo, k3. You now have 13 stitches.
  • 7. Row 8 and all even-numbered rows through Row 34 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.
  • 8. Row 9: Knit.
  • 9. Row 11: K3, *yo, k1; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, yo, k3. You now have 21 stitches.
  • 10. Row 13: Knit.
  • 11. Row 15: K3, place marker 1, (yo, k3, yo, place marker 1, k1, place marker 1) three times, yo, k3, yo, place marker 1, k3. You now have 29 stitches.
  • 12. Row 17: Knit.
  • 13. Row 19: K3, (slip marker 1, yo, knit to next marker 1, yo, slip marker 1, k1) three times, slip marker 1, yo, knit to next marker 1, yo, slip marker 1, k3. You now have 37 stitches.
  • 14. Row 21: Knit.
  • 15. Rows 23-34: Repeat Rows 19-22 three times. You now have 61 stitches at the end of Row 34.
  • 16. Row 35: Repeat Row 19. You now have 69 stitches: three border stitches at each side, 15 stitches each in four sections, and three 1-stitch marked divisions between sections.
  • 17. Row 36: K3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.
  • Lace Patterns
  • 1. Next Row (RS): K3, slip marker 1, (k1, place marker 2, work Row 1 of chart A over center 13 stitches of section, place marker 2, k1, slip marker 1, k1, slip marker 1) three times, k1, place marker 2, work Row 1 of chart A over center 13 stitches of last section, place marker 2, k1, slip marker 1, k3.
  • 2. Next Row and all WS rows to end of charts: K3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.
  • 3. Continue working lace pattern as instructed below and at same time beginning on next RS row (Row 3 of chart A), increase every fourth row next to Color 2 markers as follows.
  • 4. Increase Row (RS): K3, (slip marker 2, yo, knit to next marker 1, slip marker 1, work next row of lace pattern, slip marker 1, knit to next marker 2, yo, slip marker 2, k1) three times; slip marker 2, yo, knit to next marker 1, slip marker 1, work next row of lace pattern, slip marker 1, knit to next marker 2, yo, slip marker 2, k3 - 8 stitches increased.
  • 5. Work all increased stitches in stockinette stitch on following rows.
  • 6. Work Rows 4-8 of Chart A once, working Increase Row on Row 7. Work Rows 1-8 of Chart A four more times, working Increase Row on Rows 3 and 7 of each repeat, and removing marker 2 in final row. You now have 149 stitches: three border stitches at each side, 35 stitches each in four sections, and three 1-stitch marked divisions between sections.
  • 7. Establish pattern from Chart B and place new marker 2 on next row as follows.
  • 8. Next Row (RS): K3, slip marker 1, (k10, place marker 2, work Row 1 of chart B over center 15 stitches of section, place marker 2, k10, slip marker 1, k1, slip marker 1) three times, k10, place marker 2, work Row 1 of chart B over center 15 stitches of last section, place marker 2, k10, slip marker 1, k3.
  • 9. Work Rows 2-12 of Chart B once, then work Rows 1-12 two more times, and at the same time work Increase Row on Rows 3, 7, and 11 of each repeat, then remove marker 2 in final row. You now have 221 stitches: three border stitches at each side, 53 stitches each in four sections, and three 1-stitch marked divisions between sections.
  • 10. Establish pattern from Chart C and place new marker 2 on next row as follows.
  • 11. Next Row (RS): K3, slip marker 1, (k18, place marker 2, work Row 1 of Chart C over center 17 stitches of section, place marker 2, k18, slip marker 1, k1, slip marker 1) three times, k18, place marker 2, work Row 1 of Chart C over center 17 stitches of last section, place marker 2, k18, slip marker 1, k3.
  • 12. Work Rows 2-28 of Chart C once, and at same time work Increase Row on Rows 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, and 27 of chart. You now have 277 stitches: three border stitches at each side, 67 stitches each in four sections, and three 1-stitch marked divisions between sections.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Removing markers in first row, knit all stitches for six rows.
  • 2. Bind off loosely. Weave in ends. Block to measurements.
