With its luxurious feel and classic look, this crocheted pinwheel afghan makes the ideal accent for any sofa or rocker and is sure to keep you snuggly and warm on those cool summer nights.

  • Size
  • 1. Size is 49"x62".
  • Gauge
  • 1. Center square = 2-1/2"; one block = 11-1/2" square. (Note: Check your gauge. Use any size hook to obtain gauge.)
  • Block
  • 1. Make 20.
  • Center Square
  • 1. With CA, ch 4; join with a sl st to form a ring.
  • 2. Rnd 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, Work 8 sc in ring, sl st in beg sc.
  • 3. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc (sc, ch 2, sc) in next sc (corner made), [sc in next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next sc] 3 times; sl st in beg sc.
  • 4. Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 2 sp; * ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 2 sp; rep from * 2 more times, end with ch 1, sk last sc, sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.
  • First Square
  • 1. With right side facing, join CB in corner ch 2 sp of Center Square.
  • 2. Row 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, sc in same corner sp, sc in each sc and ch 1 sp across to next corner, sc in corner ch 2 sp; turn - 7 sc.
  • 3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc; * ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * across; turn. Row 3: Ch 1 sc in each sc and ch 1 sp across; turn - 7 sc.
  • 4. Rows 4-7: Rep Rows 2 and 3 twice, changing to CA in last sc of Row 7. At end of Row 7, fasten off CB; turn.
  • Second Square
  • 1. Rows 1-6: with CA, rep Rows 2 and 3 of First Square 3 times.
  • 2. Row 7 (Wrong Side): Rep Row 2. Fasten off.
  • 3. Rep First and Second Squares on rem sides of Center Square. Fasten off.
  • Left-Hand Triangle
  • 1. With right side facing, join CA in first st of Row 1 of First Square.
  • 2. Row 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, sc in end of each row across First and Second Squares; turn - 14 sc.
  • 3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, * ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next st; rep from * to last 3 sts, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc2tog - 13 sts.
  • 4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog (through sc and next ch 1 sp), sc in each rem st and ch 1 sp across; turn - 12 sts.
  • 5. Rows 4-13: Rep Rows 2 and 3 five more times - 2 sts rem at end of Row 13.
  • 6. Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog. Fasten off.
  • Right-Hand Triangle
  • 1. With right side facing, join CB in end (left hand side) of last row of Second Square which lies horizontally below Left-Hand Triangle just made. See the Pinwheel Diagram.

  • 2. Row 1 (Right Side): Rep Row 1 of Left-Hand Triangle. At end of row, sl st in Row 1, then Row 2 of Left-Hand Triangle; turn - 14 sc.
  • 3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog; * ch 1, sk next st, , sc in next st; rep from * across; turn - 13 sts.
  • 4. Row 3: Ch1, sc in each st and ch 1 sp across ending with sc2tog through last ch 1 sp and next sc; sl st in Row 3 and then Row 4 of Left-Hand Triangle; turn -12 sts.
  • 5. Rows 4-13: Rep Rows 2 and 3 five more times, sl stitching to corresponding rows of Left-Hand Triangle - 2 sts rem at end of Row 13.
  • 6. Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog; turn. Ch 2, sl st in top sc of Left-Hand Triangle (same st as last sl st). Fasten off.
  • 7. Work Left-Hand and Right-Hand Triangles on rem 3 corners of squares.
  • Block Edging
  • 1. With right side facing, join CA, in any corner ch 2 sp of Block.
  • 2. Rnd 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same corner sp, evenly sc in each st and row around, working (sc, ch 3, sc) in each corner ch 2 sp; sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Weave in ends on wrong side of Blocks. Arrange Blocks in four rows of five Blocks each. With CA and right side facing, use a whipstitch through front loops of sts to sew the Blocks tog in rows, then to sew the rows tog.

  • 1. With wrong side facing, join CA in 16th sc to the left of any corner ch 3 sp. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same beg st; * ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st **; rep from * to ** around, working (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, sk joining seam, sc in next ch 3 sp) between squares and [ch 1, sk 1 sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner ch 3 sp] at each corner; at end of round, ch 1, sk last sc, sl st in beg sc; turn.
  • 2. Rnd 2 (Right Side): Ch 1, sc in each ch 1 sp and sc around working (sc, ch 3, sc) in each corner ch 3 sp; sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.
  • 3. Rnd 3: With right side facing, Join CB in 13th sc to the left of a corner ch 3 sp on either long side edge. Ch 1, sc in same sc; * sk 2 sc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc - shell made) in next sc, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc **; rep from * to ** around, working at corners 1 and 3 [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 3 sp, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc] and at corners 2 and 4 [sk 2 sc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 3 sp, sc in next sc]; at end of rnd, sk 2 sc, sl st in beg sc; turn.
