  • Gauge
  • 1. In established cluster pattern, 6 clusters and 7 rows = 4"
  • Muff
  • 1. Note: Before beginning muff, cut two 12" lengths from elastic cord. Tie or sew each into 8" circle. Use sewing needle and matching thread to secure ends.
  • 2. Ch 48; join with slip st in first ch to forma a ring.
  • 3. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each ch around; join with slip st in third ch of beg ch-3-48 dc.
  • 4. Rnds 2-8: Ch 3, dc in each st around; join with slip st in third ch of beg ch-3.
  • 5. Rnd 9: Working sts around one elastic-cord circle, repeat last rnd.
  • 6. Rnd 10: Ch 2, 2dcCL in same st as join, ch 1, skip 1 st, *3dcCl in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of beg Cl-24 clusters and 24 ch-1 sp.

  • Muff - Finishing
  • 1. Using yarn and yarn needle sew last round to first round forming a double-thick tube. Weave in all ends. Turn inside out to hide seam.
  • Beret
  • 1. Note: Before beginning beret, cut 24" length from elastic cord. Tie or sew into 20" circle. Use sewing needle and matching thread to secure ends.
  • 2. Ch 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.
  • 3. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 15 dc in ring; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3-16 dc.
  • 4. Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2dcCl in same st as join, 3dcCl in each dc around; join with slip st in top of beg Cl-16 clusters.
  • 5. Rnd 3: Slip st in sp between clusters, ch 2, 2dcCl in same sp, ch 1, *3dcCl in next sp between clusters, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with slip st in beg Cl-16 clusters and 16 ch-1 sp.

  • 1. Using yarn needle, weave in ends.

  • 1. 2dcCl (2 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over, insert hook in same st or sp, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • 2. 3dcCl (3 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; [yarn over, insert hook in same st or sp, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
  • 3. Dc2tog (double crochet 2 together): [Yarn over, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] twice, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook.
  • Notes
  • 1. Elastic cords are used to add stretch and stability to muff and beret band. Cords are first formed into circles. In the indicated rounds, cords are encased in the work by laying cords over previous round and working stitches over cords.
  • 2. Muff is double thickness. A large piece is worked in the round then seamed, first round to last round, to form a double-thick tube.
