Felted Mini Purses

sizes (after felting): Purse 1 (beaded fringe), 4"x7"; Purse 2 (flower), 4"x7"; Purse 3 (beaded), 5"x9"

Materials

  • PURSE 1 (BEADED FRINGE):
  • Yarn*: Magenta Mix Black Magic (MC), 1 ball; Simply Soft Black (CC), 1 skein
  • Coordinating beaded fringe, 5” length
  • PURSE 2 (FLOWER):
  • Yarn*: Allspice (MC), 1 ball; Simply Soft Black (CC), 1 skein; Simply Soft Quick Black, 1 skein
  • Clear AB rocaille beads, 17
  • PURSE 3 (BEADED):
  • Yarn*: Allspice (MC), 2 balls
  • Large-hole seed beads, seven

Tools

  • FOR EACH:
  • Pocket Knitter (Bond America) and loop lifting tool*
  • Yarn needle

  • Matching sewing thread or fabric glue

Purses 1 & 2

  • 1. With MC, cast on 14 sts.
  • 2. Follow Pocket Knitter manufacturer's instructions to begin St st, working until piece measures 27". Bind off across.
  • 3. Fold up 1/3 of purse from bottom and sew side seams. Refer to "Felting Instructions" to felt purses.
  • 4. For handles (make two), using CC, either use Embellish-Knit or chain 34" cording length. If crocheting, work 1 sc in each ch across. Attach cording to upper sides of purse.
  • 5. For Purse 1, open front flap to expose wrong side. Fold in 1/2" on both ends of fringe tape and sew or glue to secure. Sew or glue to end of wrong side of front flap, letting beaded fringe hang.
  • 6. For Purse 2, open front flap to expose right side. Follow manufacturer's instructions and use photo as guide to loop black yarn around to form a flower and needle punch down to secure. Thread needle with #5 seed beads and sew in cluster to flower center.

Purse 3 (make two)

  • 1. With MC, cast on 14 sts. Follow Pocket- Knitter manufacturer's instructions to begin St st, working until piece measures 19-1/2". Bind off across.
  • 2. For handle, cast on 6 sts. Work in St st until handle measures 36" long. Bind off across.
  • 3. Sew both sides together to form a center seam. Fold up 1/3 of purse from bottom and sew side seams. Let handle curl into itself and sew to upper side edges of purse. Refer to "Felting Instructions" to felt purse.
  • 4. Using an 18" length of MC, thread seven black beads onto yarn. Attach yarn end to center front of purse. Attach yarn to top of purse so yarn lies flat along seam. Spread beads evenly along yarn. Tack center of yarn to center front seam of purse.

Felting Instructions

  • 1. Place knitted piece in washer with an old pair of jeans. Fill washer to 1/3 with water, add teaspoon of soap and agitate for 10 minutes, checking progress after six minutes. Spin to remove most of water. Lay flat to dry.
  • Gauge not critical for this project.
