Knitted Fabric Mitten

Materials

  • Checker print cotton fabric, 2 yds.
  • Solid cotton fabric in complementary color, 1/2 yd.

Tools

  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
  • Scissors
  • Double-pointed knitting needles: sizes 10-1/2 and 13, sets of four
  • Stitch markers
  • Stitch holder
  • Crochet hook
  • 1. From each fabric, make a continuous bias strip of fabric 1-1/2"-wide following favorite method.
  • 2. Using solid fabric and size 10-1/2 knitting needles, cast on 24 stitches.
  • 3. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Mark beginning of round. Knit in K1P1 rib for 3".
  • 4. Change to larger knitting needles and checkered fabric. Knit every round for about 1".
  • 5. Make thumb: Knit 11, place marker, knit 2, place marker, knit to end of round.
  • 6. Next row: Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, knit 2, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
  • 7. Next row: Knit all stitches.
  • 8. Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, knit 4, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
  • 9. Knit all stitches.
  • 10. Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, knit 6, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
  • 11. Knit all stitches.
  • 12. Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, knit 8, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
  • 13. Knit all stitches.
  • 14. Knit to marker; place the 10 stitches between markers on stitch holder. Cast on 2 stitches using backward loop method, knit to end of round.
  • 15. Knit all stitches until piece measures 12" from cast on.
  • 16. Decrease rows: Knit 4, knit 2 together, repeat for entire round (20 stitches).
  • 17. Knit 3, knit 2 together (16 stitches).
  • 18. Knit 2, knit 2 together (12 twelve stitches).
  • 19. Knit 1, knit 2 together (8 stitches).
  • 20. Knit 2 together (4 stitches). Cut fabric, draw through remaining 4 stitches.
  • 21. Thumb: Divide thumb stitches onto two size 13 knitting needles. Join fabric, knit 10 stitches, pick up 2 stitches from previously cast on stitches. Knit 4 rows.
  • 22. Knit 2 together across round (6 stitches). Repeat across round (3 stitches). Cut fabric and draw through remaining 3 stitches.
  • 23. Using crochet hook, pull fabric ends through to wrong side.
  • Note Variation
  • 1. Mitten "stocking" is approximately 15" long. For a larger stocking, increase the size of the knitting needles and length measurements in the knitting directions.
