French Tea Towels

Materials

  • Cotton fabrics: white linen, 3/4 yd.; red toile decorator, 3/8 yd.
  • Red embroidery floss
  • White pearl buttons, 1-3/8”, two

Tools

  • Needles: embroidery; sewing
  • Sewing machine and white thread
  • Iron and pressing board

Pattern - French Tea Towels

  • 1. Cut 17"x24" rectangle from white linen and 5"x17" rectangle from toile fabric. Sew 17" side of toile rectangle to 17" side of linen rectangle, 3/8" from edges with right sides together. Machine sew zigzag stitch over edges of seam.
  • 2. Turn edges of stitch towel rectangle over 3/8" to wrong side. Turn edges over 3/8" again. Sew around towel close to turned edges to finish.
  • 3. Print and cut out patterns. Transfer pear or apple design to center front of one towel. (Note: Bottom of words should be 1-3/4" up from top of toile fabric.) Use one strand of floss to stem stitch design. Use three strands of red floss to feather stitch over seam at joining of linen and toile.
  • 4. Use floss to sew button to center of toile rectangle.
