Pattern - Embroidered Christmas Cheer Redbird

  • General
  • 1. Print out full-size pattern.
  • 2. Overlock raw edges of fabric to prevent fraying using zigzag stitch on sewing machine. Transfer design outline from pattern sheet lightly to fabric using pencil. Center hoop over fabric and adjust tension until tight.
  • 3. Cut one bird from red felt, one branch from brown felt, and six leaves from assorted green felt. Pin felt pieces into position on tensioned fabric.
  • 4. Referring to photo for placement, stitch felt pieces in place using buttonhole stitches around outlines. Stitch branch using Bostan Tan, bird using Vermilion, and leaves using Laurel Green, Green Earth, and Maidenhair.
  • 5. Feather stitch in vines using Green Earth.
  • Mirrors
  • 1. Working in buttonhole stitch, cover washers with two strands of silk thread, leaving tail for attaching to fabric. Cover small washer using Vermillion, medium washer using Spring Leaf, and large washer using Bostan Tan.
  • 2. Position mirrors on design; hold in place with tiny piece of tape. Stitch covered washers to fabric over mirror using tail of thread and very small stitches.
  • Gold Work
  • 1. Cut six 1-1/4" lengths of pearl sadi to create main leaf veins, trimming as necessary for leaf size. Stitch sadi lengths down leaf centers like bugle beads, using one strand of handsew thread.
  • 2. Cut 26 lengths of pearl sadi ranging between 3/16" to 1/4" and stitch to leaves as before to create small leaf veins.
  • 3. Cut eight 1/8" lengths of pearl sadi. Stitch sadi lengths down onto branch as before.
  • 4. Measure and cut twirl sadi to fit around largest mirror. Couch stitch in place, using one strand of handsew thread.
  • 5. Work three rows of tiny straight stitches, fanning out from end of tail using one strand handsew thread. Refer to photo for placement.
  • Beadwork
  • 1. Attach red seed beads around red mirror in center of bird using Vermillion thread. Backstitch, moving from one bead to the next, securing thread to back of work.
  • 2. Sew gold bead in place for bird eye, then surround with six seed beads.
  • 3. Sew one larger red bead then one gold bead at end of each gold stitching row on bird's tail.
  • 4. Sew six gold beads around green-ringed mirror and four gold beads around brown-ringed mirror.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Sew gathering stitch at edge of fabric on back side of frame, making sure fabric is still tight in hoop. Pull thread to tighten and draw edges toward center of work.
  • 2. Cut circle from red felt slightly smaller than 8" hoop. Adhere in position to back of hoop to hide stitching.
