Basic Supplies

  • palette paper, paper towels, painter’s tape 1”, 1/8”, container of water, tracing and transfer paper, black pen, stylus, craft knife, cotton swabs, wire cutters, power drill

Pattern - Christmas Countdown Chalkboard

  • 1. Basecoat board with (1:1) mixture of Neutral Grey + sealer. Let dry. Measure 3" from top, 3" from bottom, 1" from left, and 1" from right and draw light lines using pencil. Mask inside rectangular area with 1" tape. Use craft knife to create precise corners.
  • 2. Print out full-size patterns. Transfer board separation lines onto panel and loosely paint lines Soft Black. Let dry. Mask off painted panel lines using 1/8" tape. Following the manufacturer's directions, paint outer border area using wood medium and let dry.
  • 3. Apply Warm White over outer border using 1" glaze/wash. Let dry.
  • 4. Remove tape and apply frame pattern onto board. Basecoat frame Honey Brown and drybrush highlight Marigold using crescent. Shade corners Dark Chocolate and add wood grain lines using 10/0 liner and thinned Soft Black. Add small nails at corners using stylus and Lamp Black. Shade around frame using curved flat and Soft Black.
  • 5. Paint inside frame area with several coats of chalkboard paint. Let dry.
  • 6. Transfer Santa and evergreen spray onto board. Basecoat as follows: face Medium Flesh; beard, hair, and mustache Neutral Grey; hat and coat trim Khaki Tan; hat and coat Heritage Brick. Add several coats of Tomato Red to hat and coat after Heritage Brick.
  • 7. Shade underneath hat brim Burnt Sienna. Drybrush a brush mix of Tomato Red and Medium Flesh on cheeks and bottom of nose. Paint inside mouth Black Plum and lower lip Medium Flesh with touch of Tomato Red. Paint sides of lower lip Black Plum. Basecoat eyebrows Neutral Grey and eyes Lamp Black.
  • 8. Add Warm White highlights to upper corner of eyes and top of nose. Add Black Plum detail lines to hat and coat following pattern. Shade above hat brim, underneath arms, beard, bottom lip, and mustache Black Plum. Highlight center of hat and tops of arms Fiery Red.
  • 9. Paint eyeglasses Lamp Black using 10/0 liner. Let dry then dry brush centers of each lens Warm White using crescent.
  • 10. Shade hair, beard, under hat brim, above mustache, under bottom lip, and mustache Soft Black. Paint hair strokes on hair, beard, and mustache thinned Light Buttermilk using 10/0 liner. Let dry. Repeat using Warm White. Paint eyebrows with tiny strokes of Warm White over Neutral Grey.
  • 11. Shade fur on sides of hat brim, bottoms of cuffs, and either side of bottom fur trim Payne's Grey. Once dry, shade front fur directly under beard and above bottom fur trim Khaki Tan. Stipple fur Light Buttermilk using deerfoot stippler allowing shaded area to still show through fur. Let dry. Stipple Warm White starting at center of fur and fading toward outer edges.
  • 12. Basecoat mittens Avocado Dip, shade toward mitten cuff Hauser Dark Green, and highlight fingertips and thumb Thermal Green.
  • 13. Paint heart Honey Brown, shade right side Soft Black, and paint string attached to heart Lamp Black. Shade beneath heart on fur Soft Black. Add lettering with black pen.
  • 14. Paint pine branch Dark Chocolate using #1 script liner; let dry. Paint pine needles thinned Hauser Dark Green using 10/0 liner; let dry. Go over pine needles with thinned Avocado Dip.
  • 15. Transfer lettering onto board. Sharpen chalk pencil and trace over words. For thicker letters, outline letter and fill in using circular motion. Use damp cotton swab to correct errors.
  • 16. Spray board with light coat of fixative spray in well-ventilated area. Let dry. Drill holes at top of board. Attach rusty wire to hang board. Curl ends of wire around pencil or brush handle.
  • Tip
  • 1. When writing in chalk, put a clean piece of tracing paper under your hand to avoid smudging the lettering.
