Materials

  • Purchased neutral colored rug, 20-1/2”x35-3/4”

Tools

  • Stencil Décor Geo Squares (#26817) (Plaid)
  • Americana Acrylic Paint: Camel; Dk. Chocolate; Hauser Med. Green; Olive Green; Warm White (DecoArt)
  • Fabric Painting Medium (DecoArt)
  • Large stencil or round bristle brushes, two
  • Masking tape
  • Small paper plates
  • 1. Pour puddle of each paint color onto its own paper plate. Mix paint colors with Fabric Painting Medium (1 medium: 2 paint).
  • 2. Begin stenciling blocks in one corner, and work your way out, covering entire rug in random pattern. Stencil larger blocks first in opaque colors; then stencil smaller transparent blocks on top and in between.
  • Note
  • 1. For best results, read all instructions and tips before beginning.
  • Tips
  • 1. Only five colors are used in this rug, but it has the appearance of many more. Acrylic colors will have different shades, depending upon technique used for stenciling and color underneath paint.
  • 2. To stencil darker opaque designs, dip a dry brush in paint. Brush cut out areas on stencil with paint, holding brush perpendicular to surface. Large bristle brushes work great on opaque areas, rather than stencil brushes because they hold more paint.
  • 3. To stencil lighter transparent designs, follow same procedure, except wipe brush on scrap paper first and then onto rug, brushing paint on surface of rug only, allowing paint underneath to show through.
  • 4. Place tap on edges of stencil to hold in place on rug while stenciling.
  • 5. Use hairdryer to speed drying time between paint colors.
