“There’s No Place Like Home” Tray

Materials

  • Wooden tray, 15”x11”
  • Assorted papers: print paper, old book pages

Tools

  • Paintbrushes: round #5; flat 1/4”, #1
  • DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Paints: Black Tie, Chartreuse, Cotton Ball, Dolphin, Leprechaun, Pumpkin Patch, Steel Grey, Turquoise Waters; Decou-Page Medium

Basic Supplies

  • scissors, pencil, tracing paper, graphite paper, black permanent marker, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Pattern - "There's No Place Like Home" Tray

  • 1. Note: Let project dry between steps and apply multiple coats of découpage medium when needed.
  • 2. Paint tray background Turquoise Waters using 1/4" flat. Dip dirty brush in Cotton Ball and Chartreuse; mix colors on tray to create background. Let dry.
  • 3. Paint 1" horizontal Chartreuse stripe across bottom of tray using #1 flat. Dip dirty brush in Cotton Ball and make 1" vertical stripes across Chartreuse stripe. Let dry.
  • 4. Paint inner and outer edge of tray Steel Grey using #1 flat. Paint checkerboard pattern on tray rim Black Tie and Cotton Ball using 1/4" flat.
  • 5. Print out patterns. Transfer pattern letters onto old book pages using graphite papers and pencil; cut out. Adhere letters to tray using découpage medium and 1/4" flat leaving space for house. Paint over letters with all paint colors using round.
  • 6. Transfer house and roof shapes onto print paper; cut out. Adhere cut-outs to tray using découpage medium and 1/4" flat. Cut windows, heart, chimney, and door from old book pages; adhere to tray using découpage medium.
  • 7. Add swirls, dots, stars, circles, and flowers onto background and house. Alternate between Steel Grey, Dolphin, Chartreuse, and Leprechaun using round.
  • 8. Draw squiggles, circles, scallops, swirls, and other accents on tray using permanent marker. Let dry. Use tray for decorative purposes only.
  • Tip
  • 1. Don't follow the directions too closely. Have fun and express yourself!
