Basic Supplies

  • sandpaper, palette, pencil, chalk pencil, tracing paper, white and black graphite paper, stylus, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Pattern - Lighthouse Bay Candle Plate

  • 1. Sand dish and wipe with cloth. Apply sealer; let dry. Sand and wipe clean. Basecoat top of dish Baby Blue, center Uniform Blue, and bottom Burgundy. Extend Burgundy over edges of rim. Let dry.
  • 2. Coat top of dish with extender. Around center indentation, brush 1-1/2" area Uniform Blue; pull paint with stippling brush to soften and blend into Baby Blue. Let dry. Repeat, using Baby Blue and working from plate edge toward darker center. Let dry.
  • 3. Print out pattern. Transfer main elements onto dish. Basecoat sand Sand and water between islands Uniform Blue. Shade sand with sideload of Burnt Umber. Drybrush center of each island Sand.
  • 4. Paint fences thinned Burnt Umber using 10/0 liner. Paint grass Hauser Light Green and Black Green. Paint sailboats as follows: hulls Deep Burgundy, sails Light Buttermilk, masts Burnt Umber.
  • 5. Basecoat lighthouses as follows: Tower 1 Heritage Brick, Tower 2 Light Buttermilk and house Heritage Brick, Tower 3 striped with Light Buttermilk and Deep Burgundy, Tower 4 Light Buttermilk tower and keeper's house with Deep Burgundy roof. Paint all doors, windows, and remaining roofs Lamp Black. Paint all lights Moon Yellow.
  • 6. Stipple trees beside Lighthouses 1 and 4 Hauser Dark Green and Hauser Light Green using stippling brush. Paint pine trees beside Lighthouses 2 and 3 Black Green using chisel edge of #2 flat by first tapping in trunks, then branches.
  • 7. Shade lighthouses Burnt Umber. Highlight line just right of center on Lighthouse 3 Light Buttermilk. Shade lights on left side using small sideload of Burnt Sienna. Highlight roofs on right with small float of Baby Blue.
  • 8. Complete all Lighthouse linework (railings, supports, lightning rods, etc.) with thinned Lamp Black using 10/0 script. Pull lines from both sides of lights for rays from lamps using sideload of Moon Yellow.
  • 9. Paint boat hulls Moon Yellow; shade with float of Burnt Umber. Paint railings, masts, and booms Burnt Umber. Paint sails Light Buttermilk; shade with float of Burnt Umber. Paint flags Deep Burgundy.
  • 10. Add Light Buttermilk stars. For small stars, paint letter "A" extending cross bar beyond uprights with 10/0 script. For smaller stars, paint dots with small end of stylus.
  • 11. Allow paint to cure for several days. Apply several coats of varnish. Let dry. Add pillar candle to center of dish.
  • Tip
  • 1. This design lends itself well to any circular surface. Consider painting the design on wooden charger plates or creating placemats featuring individual lighthouses for an unforgettable ensemble.
