Painted Welcome Winter Sled

Materials

  • Wooden sled, 24” long

Tools

  • Loew-Cornell La Corneille Golden Taklon Paintbrushes: Series 7300 Shader #4, 8; Series 7350 Liner #2, Series 7550 Glaze/Wash 1”
  • Stencils: StencilGirl Products Broken Circles, snowflakes, large and small retro starbursts
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paints: Blue Harbor, French Mauve, Lamp Black, Mauve, Moon Yellow, Purple Cow, Sand, Santa Red, Sea Breeze, Spiced Pumpkin; Weathered Wood Crackle Medium; Multi-Purpose Sealer

Basic Supplies

  • transfer paper, pencil, painter’s tape, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Pattern - Painted Welcome Winter Sled

  • 1. Print out full-size pattern.
  • 2. Remove pull cord from sled; set aside. Basecoat sled front Blue Harbor, steering bar Sea Breeze, and runners Lamp Black using glaze/wash.
  • 3. Transfer pattern to sled. Stencil snowflakes and retro starbursts randomly across sled front and steering bar Snow White. Using photo as guide, paint dot highlights on starburst circles and snowflakes Snow White using liner.
  • 4. Paint steering bar lettering Lamp Black using liner.
  • 5. Undercoat white sections of hat Sand, then basecoat Snow White. Basecoat remaining section of hat and entire scarf Lamp Black. Add Lamp Black lines and dots to hat and Snow White lines and dots using liner. (Note: Handle ends of brushes can be used as stylus for easier dot-making.)
  • 6. Undercoat snowman body and face Sand, then basecoat Snow White. Basecoat scarf Lamp Black.
  • 7. Paint eyes and mouth Lamp Black using #4 shader. Paint nose Spiced Pumpkin using liner.
  • 8. Stencil "buttons" Sea Breeze. Dot inside each circle section Snow White using liner.
  • 9. Undercoat birds and ball on hat (1:1) mixture of French Mauve + Mauve, then basecoat Santa Red using #8 shader. Dot bird eyes Lamp Black using handle end of brush; highlight dot Snow White using liner. Paint bird beaks Moon Yellow using #4 shader. Paint bird tails and strip on hat ball Lamp Black using liner; dot Snow White. Tape off section of Broken Circle stencil to use for bird wings and hat ball accent. Drybrush stencil (1:1) mixture of Snow White + Santa Red. Add Snow White stripes using liner.
  • 10. Paint Weathered Wood on rails using glaze/wash; let dry completely. Brush over rails thinned Purple Cow using long strokes.
  • 11. Using photo as guide, outline elements Lamp Black using liner.
  • 12. When completely dry, apply one or two coats of sealer. Reattach pull cord.
