Pattern - A View of the Lake

  • Preparation
  • 1. Seal entire box with wood sealer; let dry then sand using fine-grit sandpaper. Use foam brush (or 1" wash brush) and Bleached Sand to base lid top. Use equal mix of Bleached Sand + Cool Neutral to base edge of lid, box bottom and entire inside of box. Repeat as needed for solid coverage sanding lightly between coats.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer sky, water, and land lines.
  • Painting Instructions
  • 1. Mix 1 = Prussian Blue + Black Green (2:1) + tch. of Traditional Burnt Umber
  • 2. Mix 2 = Winter Blue + Prussian Blue + Black Green (1:2:1) + tch. of Traditional Burnt Umber
  • 3. Mix 3 = True Ochre + Black Green (1:2)
  • 4. Mix 4 = Rookwood Red + Prussian Blue (1:1)
  • Step 1
  • 1. Sky: Use large angular shader to float Winter Blue starting at top and working towards horizon line. (Note: Color should float about two-thirds down from top.) Color may need to be floated several times to create a smooth transition.
  • 2. Water: Use large angular shader to wash Winter Blue in water area starting behind front foreground and washing up toward horizon line.
  • 3. Land and Middle Ground Area: Wash middle ground Driftwood; repeat to achieve solid coverage. Repeat same for foreground land working color over rocks and grass up to water's edge.
  • 4. Large Tree: Transfer pattern. Base Khaki Tan.
  • Artist's Tips
  • 1. When floating on water, dampen area with clean water, side-load large angle brush (or flat using less water), lay brush on edge or against object and pull straight down; then staying up on chisel edge, gently sweep brush towards shade side of water. Color can be applied using rake fan brush sweeping lightly over water till areas of light appear.

  • 2. Middle Ground Foliage Area: Use water and large angle brush to dampen area behind greenery. Use angular bristle and brush mix of Winter Blue and Bleached Sand; pounce off excess on palette and begin to lightly pounce brush over dampened area allowing color to soften into sky creating a soft misty foliage shadow. For foliage, load angular bristle with Reindeer Moss Green and tap onto area that was dampened with water. Thin following paints with water (1:2 ratio): Light Avocado; Mix 3; Traditional Raw Umber; tap color washes over Reindeer Moss Green to add shading to foliage. (Note: Colors can be tapped in darker at base of foliage and lighter in groups that are furthest back. Color can be laid in one at a time or working wet-into-wet.) Let dry. Use equal mix of Reindeer Moss Green + Buttermilk to tap light values into tree tops; repeat with Buttermilk.
  • 3. Pull tree trunks using liner brush loaded with Traditional Raw Umber. In thick tree area, pull in lines that are angular and straight between foliage to give an illusion that only part of branch is visible. For tree in front of foliage, pull trunk with Khaki Tan then Traditional Raw Umber. Tap foliage into branches using Lt. Avocado, then Reindeer Moss Green, and finally with equal mix of Reindeer Moss Green + Buttermilk. (Note: If desired, tap in a few touches of Rookwood Red and/or Rookwood Red + True Ochre.)
  • 4. For sandy ground below foliage, shade Bleached Sand along top, then use equal mix of Lt. Avocado + Traditional Raw Umber to float remaining area. If more green is desired in this area, float with equal mix of Antique Gold Deep + Traditional Raw Umber.
  • 5. Sky: Use Mix 1 to lightly float top corners of sky and to lightly pat shadow area of trees. (Note: If desired, dampen background with water before floating color.)
  • 6. Clouds: Use large dome round and brush mix of Lt. Buttermilk and Bleached Sand to dry brush clouds; randomly scrub color in center of sky area allowing some blue base color to show. Keep clouds loose and airy.
  • 7. Use thinned Buttermilk to lightly wash over some areas to create warm areas. If desired, use Lt. Buttermilk to dry brush again in light cloud areas to brighten. Should sky areas need to be softened, use equal mix of thinned Bleached Sand + Winter Blue to wash over area or transition lines. Should horizon line areas need to be lightened, float with thin wash of Lt. Buttermilk and allow color to fade up into sky.
  • 8. Water: Use Mix 2 to float along foreground of middle ground. Use equal mix of Winter Blue + Lt. Buttermilk to float from left side (along tree edge) across water towards middle ground area; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk several times until a strong light is achieved. Use equal mix of thinned Buttermilk + Antique Gold Deep to wash middle area of water.
  • 9. When at least two light values have been applied, add reflection. For first reflection use equal mix of True Ochre + Raw Umber, for second reflection use equal mix of Raw Umber + Black Green. If desired, a purple reflection accent color can be added by floating Mix 4. This same mix can be washed into sky or tree shadow area if desired.
  • Large Tree
  • 1. Wash light area with thin layer True Ochre. Shading can be floated or dry brushed using Driftwood, Traditional Raw Umber, and equal mix of Traditional Raw Umber + Black Green. If a warmer brown is desired, wash thin layer Traditional Burnt Umber in shade area. Dry brush highlights with equal mix of Driftwood + Bleached Sand; repeat with Bleached Sand.
  • 2. Tap leaves with dark values of Lt. Avocado + tch. of Traditional Burnt Umber, middle values of Reindeer Moss Green, and light values of Reindeer Moss Green + Buttermilk.
  • Rocks, Grass, and Sand
  • 1. Refer to worksheet. Base with equal mix of Driftwood + Traditional Raw Umber. Shading can be floated or dry brushed using Traditional Raw Umber; dry brush highlights with equal mix of Bleached Sand + Driftwood; repeat with Bleached Sand. A dark value can be added using equal mix of Black Green + Traditional Raw Umber. Accents can be added using Rookwood Red, Lt. Avocado, or Traditional Burnt Umber.
  • 2. For patch grass appearance, float Lt. Avocado around rocks and sweep sand area. For grass blades, load rake fan with equal mix of Black Green + Traditional Raw Umber and pull brush up. Pull lighter grasses of Lt. Avocado, then with equal mix of Lt. Avocado + Reindeer Moss Green, and then with equal mix of Reindeer Moss Green + Bleached Sand.
  • 3. Dry brush Bleached Sand at right of sandy area the sweep across foreground to lighten. Spatter ground in middle ground area and foreground with Traditional Raw Umber, Traditional Burnt Umber, and a touch of Black Green. If desired, spatter foreground area with light colors of Driftwood and Bleached Sand.
  • Mallards
  • 1. Refer to painting chart. Transfer patterns. Base heads of male mallards with Mix 3 + tch. of Prussian Blue; base female head Traditional Burnt Umber. Lightly wash wing areas with Traditional Burnt Umber. Wash neck area Rookwood Red. Base dark tail feather with Prussian Blue + tch. of Mix 3. Use same mix to paint colored feathers on wing. Use Driftwood to paint lower belly area and light tail area. Shade top of male heads with stronger green mix value and female with stronger Traditional Burnt Umber. Wash neck again with Rookwood Red. Pull in feathers on top of wing with Traditional Burnt Umber and lower wing feathers with brush mix of Winter Blue and Driftwood; shade lower wing feathers Traditional Burnt Umber. Shade breast and tail area with equal mix of Driftwood + Traditional Burnt Umber. Highlight each side of colored feathers with Bleached Sand. Add Lt. Buttermilk neck stripe. Highlight tail feathers and belly area Bleached Sand.
  • 2. Paint legs and feet with brush mix of True Ochre and Rookwood Red. Base beaks True Ochre; shade Traditional Burnt Umber. Dot eye with brush mix of Traditional Burnt Umber and Prussian Blue.
  • Finishing Bottom of Box and Lid
  • 1. Refer to painting chart. For marbleized wood, dampen bottom of box and lid edges with water. Side-load flat or angular shader with Cool Neutral; lay brush down on wet background and randomly pat brush lightly into wet areas. Allow to dry; repeat using mix of Traditional Raw Umber + True Ochre (2:1). Let dry and repeat again with Traditional Raw Umber. Let dry. Side-load Bleached Sand into almost dry large angular shader and dry brush highlight here and there.
  • 2. (Note: Cover lid to avoid any mishaps.) Spatter bottom of box, lid edges, and inside box with Traditional Raw Umber. Mix metallic paints and spatter again. Use Gold Leaf Pen to outline edges of lid; repeat same for inside edges of bottle compartments and box frame.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Apply several light spray sealer coats.

  • 1. Use same size pattern or enlarge to adapt design for a framed art piece for dad's office or den, or even to decorate a basement wall.
