Spice Tin Garden Angels

  • Spice Tin Garden Angels


  • Recycled metal spice cans, 2”x3”
  • Wooden items: knobs, 2-1/4”, three; hearts, 1/4” thick, 2-1/2”x2-1/2”, six; split wren eggs, 7/8”, six
  • Bird nests, 1-1/2”, three
  • Spanish moss
  • Americana Acrylics (DecoArt): Golden Straw; Dried Basil Green; Georgia Clay; Light Avocado
  • Pearl Ex Aztec Gold pigment powder (Jacquard)
  • Hemp (Toner Crafts): Natural; Black
  • Natural jute
  • Assorted clay beads: square; red oval


  • Duraclear Varnish (DecoArt)
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue (Duncan)
  • Sanding block
  • Drill and 1/16” bit
  • Screwdriver
  • 1. Paint: one knob and two hearts Golden Straw; one knob and two hearts Georgia Clay; remaining knob and two hearts Light Avocado; eggs Dried Basil Green. Mix equal parts varnish with pigment powder; dry brush painted items.
  • 2. Drill hole in bottom and left and right sides of spice cans, just under lids. Cut six 12" lengths from black hemp. For hanger, insert ends of hemp into drilled holes. Tie knot at ends to secure inside can. For remaining three lengths, thread bead onto end of hemp. Tie knot above bead and repeat until three beads are threaded per string. Insert one end of beaded hemp into hole on bottom of can. Bring end up through top opening and tie a knot to secure inside can. Let beaded string dangle below can. Lightly sand spice cans to distress.
  • 3. Wrap hemp and jute around hearts several times. Knot in center. Glue hearts to back of cans by applying glue to front ends of hearts and back of can. Lay can on back side while glue sets. Glue two eggs into each nest. Glue small bundle of moss to bottom of nest. Let glue set thoroughly before proceeding.
  • 4. When glue is dry on angel heads, use the screws and screwdriver to attach heads to inside of lid opening. Close lid and hang to display.
