Basic Supplies

  • spatula, stencil sponge, flat paintbrush, sandpaper, scissors, spoon, newspaper (to cover work surface), ruler, rubber gloves
  • 1. Use Foam Cutter to cut 4" and 5" balls in half. Use metal spoon to scoop out each half ball to create four hollow half balls. Scoop ball out evenly to create 3/8"-thick shell.
  • 2. Following manufacturer's instructions, mix Smooth Finish™ prior to use. Wearing rubber gloves, completely coat ball with Smooth Finish using spatula or flat paintbrush. When using spatula, apply small amount to foam and spread evenly in all directions, working finish into foam cells. When using paintbrush, load material onto brush and spread onto foam, smoothing lumps as you work. Let dry. Sand each half ball for super smooth finish.
  • 3. Paint 5" half ball and 4" half ball copper and other two halves bronze. Use stencil sponge to create spots on mushrooms in contrasting colors as shown. Let dry.
  • 4. Cut 36" length of burlap. Cut burlap lengthwise into three strips about 1-1/2" wide. Adhere one end of one strip to bottom of 9" cone. Begin wrapping burlap around cone, overlapping edges slightly. Adhere end. Adhere next strip in place and continue wrapping to completely cover cone. Repeat process to cover 6" cone with burlap.
  • 5. Cut top 4" off remaining 9" cone (for smallest mushroom's stem). Cut 1" off bottom of remaining 5" of cone. Cover both stems by wrapping with wired sisal rope, securing ends in place with glue gun.
  • 6. Adhere each mushroom top to cone base using glue gun.
  • Tip
  • 1. Experiment with holiday-inspired red and green acrylic paints for a different look.
