Pattern - Witch's Spell Floor Cloth

  • 1. Cut 20"x30" from fabric. On covered work surface, apply coat of gesso to both sides of cloth using roller; let dry and repeat. Clean and dry roller.
  • 2. Load roller with moderate amounts of extender and generous amounts of Moon Yellow. Basecoat one side of cloth. Load dirty roller with Vivid Orange. Roll onto wet yellow layer along bottom 30" side, working about two-thirds of cloth, fading color toward top. Reload dirty roller with Pure Orange; repeat process, working halfway up cloth to create gradient effect. Let dry overnight.
  • 3. Measure and mark 1-1/2" border around cloth perimeter; basecoat Lavender.
  • 4. Print out full-size patterns. Transfer patterns to cloth, omitting details. Make tracing of details; set aside.
  • 5. Basecoat legs (1:1) mixture of Lime Green + Wicker White; add second coat of pure Lime Green. Float Thicket shading on legs; float additional Thicket shading where legs cross. Transfer stripes to legs. Paint stripes Licorice using #2 round. Load stippler with Wicker White. Offload excess paint onto paper towel; drybrush soft highlights down center of legs. Add strong thin Wicker White highlight down center of each leg using #2 round.
  • 6. Basecoat shoes Licorice. Transfer details to shoes. Highlight shoes and define top edges and details with (1:1) mixture of Wicker White + Licorice. Drybrush strong highlights on toe with same mixture using #2 round. Paint laces Lavender using #0 round; highlight laces with touch of Wicker White on dirty brush. Basecoat buttons Lavender; float Eggplant shading and sheer Wicker White highlights.
  • 7. Basecoat letters Lavender. Float sheer Eggplant shading and touch of Wicker White highlights.
  • 8. Transfer webs. Draw in webs with pen, adding Licorice dots at outer edge of web with stylus. Highlight here and there with thinned Wicker White on liner brush.
  • 9. Load stencil brush with Licorice; offload excess onto paper towel. Using circular motions, stencil checkerboard on border. Let dry overnight.
  • 10. Apply several coats of sealer letting dry between coats. Let cure several days before use.
  • Tip
  • 1. Choose the right brush for the right job. Use larger brushes to basecoat, angular shaders for shading and highlights, and blender brushes to blend and soften.
