Pattern - Teddy Bear Hugs

  • Artist's Tips
  • 1. All dry brushing is done using round dry brush or chisel blender. Use #10 or #14 shaders or flat wash to float colors; soften floats with mop brush, gently pouncing over water's edge. Use script liners to do all line work; thin paint to inky consistency and blot tip on paper towel to "sharpen" point. To rake, fully load tooth (rake) brush with thinned paint. Flick tips of bristles on hard surface such as palette edge to remove immediate paint build up and to open bristles. For ease in painting, turn surface to stroke towards yourself; rest wrist on table, hold brush straight up at base of area, and flick brush towards yourself pivoting tip of handle away from you, and allowing bristles to taper off naturally.
  • Preparation
  • 1. Use painter's tape to tape off design area at front of bucket, 3/4" from side seams or measure 8" across top and 5" across bottom of bucket. Burnish edges to prevent seepage. Use fine grit sanding sponge to sand area removing sheen. Wipe with rubbing alcohol. Use wedge/cosmetic sponge or petifour to apply Gesso. Use dry wedge/cosmetic sponge or petifour and Very Dark Green Mix (see "Color Mixes" below) to base background area. (Note: To remove bubbles, softly blow over them.) Let dry. Use fine grit sandpaper to sand smooth. Repeat for opaque coverage.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic pattern lines.

  • Bear
  • 1. Shade Raw Umber. Rake fur on entire bear with brush mix of Medium Brown Mix, a touch of Yellow Oxide, and Titanium White. Lighten mix with more Titanium White; brighten fur on left side of bear and a touch on right side. (Note: If desired, brighten areas again adding more Titanium White to mix and covering less area using fewer strokes.) Wash entire body Quinacridone Gold. Rake left side again with lighter mix.
  • Facial Features
  • 1. Float narrow Raw Umber around each element. Base eyes Titanium White, iris Pine Green, and pupil Carbon Black. Use brush mix of Cerulean Blue and Titanium White to float along right side of entire eye. Add thin Titanium White highlight lines on left sides. Use Carbon Black to outline eyes and add eyelashes.
