Pattern - From the Vine to Wine

  • Preparation
  • 1. Apply sealer. Use fine-grit sandpaper to sand lightly; wipe dust. Use Avocado to base outsides of surface for opaque coverage. Sand lightly; wipe dust. Mix Lt. Avocado and small amount of water to base again. While wet, use sea sponge or crumpled up plastic wrap to softly sponge Silver Sage Green over background. (Note: Make sure to pounce excess paint off on palette before applying to surface.) With clean side of sponge or plastic wrap, soften color for soft mottled look. (Note: If mottling looks overdone, step back to Lt. Avocado; first re-dampen surface with water then reapply some of background color.) Use brown paper bag to lightly buff surfaces. Use Dark Green Mix to shade outer edges of front and back surfaces. Base remaining areas of wine caddy Glorious Gold.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic pattern lines onto front and back of wine rack. (Transfer details as needed.) Base as follows: wine bottle Avocado; label French Vanilla; grapes, wash of Hauser Lt. Green; stem Burnt Sienna. Transfer wording.

  • 1. Dark Green Mix = Avocado + Black Green (1:1)
  • Artist's Tips
  • 1. Use #12 shader and largest size Bobbies' Blender brush for area to be shaded or highlighted. Using too small of a blender brush means dome of brush has to touch (thus remove) too much paint to make technique successful. Use largest possible brush in area so the fewer times blender dome touches surface, not only will you have more blending time, but strength of paint will stay on surface and not be lifted away.
  • 2. All shading and highlighting are done with wet-on-wet technique. With dampened water brush (large flat or glaze/wash brush), blot some water on paper towel, go directly to area to be shaded or highlighted, stroke back and forth, up and down, pushing water from brush into wood. Repeat process, stroking back and forth some ten to twenty times allowing wood to absorb some moisture and so there is a soft shine on surface. You do not want a puddle of water lying on surface. Float color; use dry blender to pounce over water's edge.
  • Wine Bottle
  • 1. Float wide Avocado shading along bottle sides; shade again with Dark Green Mix covering less area. Use liner and Glorious Gold to line bottom and top edges of label. Float wide Burnt Sienna shading along label sides; deepen shading with Burnt Umber to include lined edges. Paint lettering with Dark Green Mix.
  • 2. Use mix of Hauser Lt. Green + tch of Lt. Buttermilk to add highlight down center of bottle; add touch more Lt. Buttermilk to mix and highlight area again covering less area. Again add touch more Lt. Buttermilk to mix for final highlight shine down center. Highlight center of label Lt. Buttermilk; repeat covering less area. Add final Lt. Buttermilk highlight shine down center.
  • Grapes
  • 1. Use Avocado to shade grapes apart. Second shading is added in triangles of color using Dark Green Mix.
  • 2. Highlights are built using same colors as wine bottle. Add blushes of Deep Burgundy on grapes and to bottom area of wine bottle closest to grapes. Shade grape stem Burnt Umber; add small French Vanilla highlight. Paint curly vines Burnt Umber; highlight French Vanilla here and there.
  • Table
  • 1. Float tabletop Burnt Sienna; repeat with Burnt Umber. Add small French Vanilla highlight.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Add Lt. French Blue reflective highlights to outer edge of bottle and to grapes closest to bottle, keeping color very soft.
  • 2. Use Glorious Gold to add trim line. Apply several varnish coats. Buff gently with steel wool. (Note: Add felt circles to bottom of surface to prevent sticking or scratching.)
