Basic Supplies

  • newspaper (to cover work surface), rubber gloves, craft stick, mixing bowl, wet paper towel or cloth, toothpick, ruler, sponge
  • 1. Cover work surface with newspaper. Open each package of Cathedral Glass Tiles; use Wheeled Glass Nipper to cut tiles in half.
  • 2. Working in small sections, lightly coat back of tiles with glue; press around base of cone, alternating between Red and Green. Keep top edges of tiles as straight as possible leaving 1/8" of space between tiles. Let glue set.
  • 3. Add second row of Mirror Tiles above red/green row. Do not cut tiles; adhere to cone following Step 2. Let glue set.
  • 4. Continue adding rows of Red/Green and Mirror tiles around cone. When approximately 2" from top of cone, cut Mirror tiles in half lengthwise for better fit. Adhere Mirror tiles around cone. Add one more row of Red/Green tiles. Finish top of cone by use Wheeled Glass Nipper to cut Red and Green tiles on diagonal, creating large triangles. Adhere triangles on top of cone. Repeat Steps 1-4 to cut and adhere tiles on remaining cones. For large cone, fill in area on top of cone with triangles and other cut tiles. Let glue set.
  • 5. Following manufacturer's instructions, mix 1-1/2 cups of grout in mixing bowl using craft stick. Wearing rubber gloves, apply grout to surface of trees (including top) using craft stick and back and forth movement.
  • 6. When all trees have been grouted, use wet paper towel or cloth to remove excess grout from glass. Insert toothpick into top of each tree to create space for toppers. Let set for one hour. Remove toothpick.
  • 7. Buff glass tiles to remove excess dust and film using sponge. Wipe trees of dust and excess grout.
  • 8. Cut eleven 6" lengths from 16-gauge wire using wire cutters. Use round-nose pliers to hold end of wire length in one hand; use other hand to curl wire length into spiral shape, leaving 3" on end. Curl three lengths for each small tree and five lengths for large tree. Holding wrapped spirals together in fingers, wrap 2" length of 24-gauge wire around center to secure. Repeat for remaining wire spirals.
  • 9. Cut two 8" and one 10" lengths of 16-gauge wire using wire cutters. Spiral each wire length into cone shape using round-nose pliers.
  • 10. Insert straight ends of each spiral-wrapped group into top of each wrapped cone. Insert ends into top of each tree. Spot glue to secure if needed.
  • Tip
  • 1. After applying grout, use damp sponge to smooth grout into cracks. Rinse sponge often and remove excess. Once grout begins to harden, it is difficult to remove.
