Mosaic Garden Accent

  • FloraCraft Make It: Fun project featuring Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam Ball, 6”
  • Purchased stone or metal pedestal
  • Polished river stones, 1” diameter, 50-75
  • Polished river pebbles, 1/2” diameter, 100-150
  • Pre-mixed grout, 1 qt.


  • Design Master Matte Clear Spray Finish
  • DecoArt Espresso Gel Stain
  • Glue gun and sticks

Basic Supplies

  • newspaper (to cover work surface), cardboard box (for spraying paint), butter knife, paper plate, paper towels, bowl, paintbrush
  • 1. In newspaper-covered work area, use butter knife to apply 1/2"-thick layer of grout on 3" area on foam ball. See Photo 1.

  • 2. Randomly press river stones and pebbles into grout, allowing grout to form secure bond around edges of pieces. See Photo 2. (Note: Avoid getting grout on surface of stones, since it's easier to be careful than to have to wipe away grout with a damp paper towel.)

  • 3. While grout is still wet, apply another 4" area of grout next to first, carefully blending grout areas using tip of knife. Add stones and pebbles to grout. Continue applying grout and stones until about half of ball is covered. Set ball in bowl with wet grout facing up. Let dry.
  • 4. Finish other half of ball, blending grout areas as much as possible using tip of knife. Let dry overnight.
  • 5. Squeeze gel stain onto paper plate. With dry mosaic ball in bowl, paint small area with gel stain. See Photo 3.

  • 6. Dab area with damp paper towel to remove as much stain as desired. See Photo 4. Repeat process until all areas of ball are stained. Let dry thoroughly. Apply gel stain to pedestal, if desired. Let dry.

  • 7. In well-ventilated, newspaper-covered area (or inside cardboard box), spray entire mosaic ball with clear matte sealer. (Note: Keep spray light for matte look or spray several times for shinier look.) Let dry. Apply clear matte sealer to pedestal. Let dry. Set ball on pedestal; use glue gun to adhere if desired.
