Papier-Mache Faberge Egg

  • Papier-Mache Faberge Egg


  • Oval balloon
  • Newspaper strips
  • Flour and water mixture
  • Acrylic paint: purple or red
  • Plastic gems and rhinestones
  • Small ornament or figurine
  • Recycled small aluminum can
  • Ribbon


  • Craft glue
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Scissors
  • Paint or craft brush
  • Newspaper (to cover work surface)
  • 1. On covered work surface, tear newspaper into 3"-long strips. In bowl, mix flour and luke warm water to thin mixture. Stir until lumps are dissolved.
  • 2. Inflate balloon to about 5". Dip newspaper strips into flour mixture and press on balloon, covering all areas. Let layer dry. Apply second layer. Let dry. Apply third layer. Let dry. For stand, cover recycled can with newspaper strips. Let dry.
  • 3. Measure and draw 3" oval on side of newspaper egg. Use scissors to cut oval from egg (for opening). Pop balloon and remove.
  • 4. Paint egg and stand red or purple. Let dry. Glue ribbon around oval opening. Let dry.
  • 5. Glue jewels, beads, and other embellishments on painted egg. Let dry. Glue small ornament or figurine inside opening of egg. Let dry.
  • 6. Position egg on stand. To hang, use scissors to cut small hole in top of egg. Insert ribbon length through hole; knot ends together.
