Basic Supplies

  • paper trimmer, ruler, newspapers, rubber gloves, sanding block, scoring tool, foam paintbrush, craft knife and cutting mat
  • 1. Measure and cut copper foil large enough to cover front and sides of frame.
  • 2. Cover work surface with newspapers. In a well-ventilated area, preferably outside, follow manufacturer's instructions to prepare Liver of Sulphur solution. Fill a second container with clean water.
  • 3. Wearing protective gloves, dip copper piece into solution. Dip in water to stop chemical reaction; set aside to dry.
  • 4. Emboss aged copper with paisley texture. Gently sand raised surfaces to create contrast.
  • 5. Place foil on work surface, embossed side down. Place frame on top of foil and score around outside edges. (Note: Scoring will create a crisper fold when wrapping frame.)
  • 6. Use foam brush to apply even layer of glue to frame front. Adhere foil to frame; carefully burnish foil to surface using brayer.
  • 7. Wrap foil around first side of frame; adhere and burnish foil to frame. Repeat for each side, working on one side at a time.
  • 8. Place frame on work surface, embossed side down. Using craft knife, cut "X" in frame opening. Fold back and adhere each foil section.
  • 9. Die cut/emboss Bitty Blossom #3 and double leaves from brass craft foil. Roll flower, shaping with fingers; secure with glue. Let dry.
  • 10. Adhere leaves and flower to corner of frame; let dry.
  • Tip
  • 1. Instead of aging copper foil with Liver of Sulphur, try painting over embossed metal with bright acrylic paints. Gently sand away some paint for a charming shabby-chic look.
