Pattern - Houndstooth Purse

  • 1. Note: Use 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
  • 2. Print out full-size patterns. Press fabrics before cutting. Trace patterns onto fabric and interfacing as indicated and cut out. Press fusible interfacing with adhesive side down to wrong side of exterior purse pieces. Repeat for interior purse pieces. Transfer all markings and darts.
  • 3. For handle, cut two 3-1/2"x20" rectangles from faux leather. Turn long edge of handle over 1/2" and machine-sew using 1/4" seam allowance. Turn edge over and stitch again using 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat for other handle.
  • 4. To make inside pocket, place pocket pieces, right sides together, with interfacing fused to wrong side of one piece. Machine-sew together leaving 3" opening at bottom center of pocket. Clip corners; turn right side out. Push out corners and press. Topstitch top edge of pocket.
  • 5. Place purse front interior piece with right side up. Pin and center pocket 2" from bottom edge. Machine-sew around sides and bottom of pocket using 1/4" seam allowance. Hand-sew using backstitch at start and finish to reinforce pocket. Machine-sew down pocket center. Machine-sew down center of divided section. Trim threads.
  • 6. To make side pockets, position one exterior side pocket, right sides together, with second exterior pocket. Machine-sew top and bottom selvage. Turn right side out and press. Topstitch top edge only.
  • 7. To attach side pockets, measure 3" down from top of exterior side panel and pin side pocket on right side. Machine-sew across bottom edge of pocket. Baste side selvage of pocket to side selvage of exterior side panel. Repeat with other side pocket and exterior side panel.
  • 8. Machine-sew bottom edge of exterior side panels and press open. Fold exterior purse front piece in half and mark center with pin. Match center seam of exterior side panel with center pin of exterior front. With right sides together, pin bottom edge of exterior purse front piece to side panel. Starting at dot marked on pattern, machine-sew to other dot. Remove from machine and trim threads. Cut 1/2" into exterior side panel at dots. Turn exterior side panel along exterior purse front and pin selvages together, making sure side pockets are flat. Starting at corner, machine-sew selvages and repeat on other side. Trim threads. Repeat with other exterior purse piece. Press seams open. Set aside.
  • 9. To make purse interior, repeat Step 7 except for exterior side pockets. When assembled, press seams open.
  • 10. To assemble, place exterior purse facing out and right side of interior facing in. Slide purse interior over exterior, so exterior is sitting inside of interior with right sides of fabric facing. Pin top selvages together to match side seams. Machine-sew around. Open bottom seam of purse interior 4" using seam ripper. Pull purse exterior through opening. Using chopstick or spoon handle, push all corners and edges out. Press top edge of purse. Topstitch top edge of purse using 1/4" seam allowance.
  • 11. Slip one end of handle through D-ring. Fold raw edges under 1/4", measure 1" from D-ring, and stitch across edge so D-ring is attached to handle. Repeat with all ends of each handle.
  • 12. Wrap purse attachment point through front side of D-ring, facing right side of handle out. Fold raw edge over 1/4" and stitch, measuring 1/2" from the D-ring (Note: This can vary some. The important part is that all purse attachment points are equidistant from each D-ring.)
  • 13. To make dahlia flower, cut 20 large petals, 16 medium petals, one circle, and 3"x20" strip from White felt. Fold strip in half length-wise and clip fold every 1/4". With strip still folded, roll up one end and start securing with needle and thread. Continue rolling and securing with thread and needle. Set aside when done. To make petals, fold petal sides forward overlapping slightly. Secure using glue gun. Repeat for all petals. When dry, start adhering large petals to outer rim of circle. Adhere small petals onto circle overlapping larger petals. Take rolled strip and hand-sew to center. Use large safety pin to secure flower to outside of purse.
