Pattern - Dresden Jungle Animals Play Quilt

  • 1. Print out full-size patterns. Cut fabric following patterns.
  • 2. To create center Dresden, pin A1 and A2 with right sides together and sew along shortest edge on right. Open pieces and pin A2 and A3 with right sides facing and sew along short edge on right. Continue in same manner, sewing A4 to A3, until you have four pieces sewn in A1-A2-A3-A4 strip. Repeat with remaining A pattern pieces until you have four strips.
  • 3. Repeat Step 1 with B pattern pieces to create four separate strips. Start with B4 to create pattern of B4-B1-B2-B3.
  • 4. Working one strip at a time, pin one A strip to one B strip along curve with right sides together. Fold four pieces of decorative ribbon in half, pin between two layers of strips, and line up center mark between finished seams. Repeat with remaining A and B strips and ribbon pieces until you have four sections of Dresden.
  • 5. Repeat Step 3 to attach C pattern pieces along top curve to bottom curve of B pattern pieces.
  • 6. Pin together each Dresden section along straight side edges with right sides facing each other. Sew along each straight edge to create large ring.
  • 7. On wrong side, mark four equal points on edge of Dresden circle opening. With right sides facing each other, match up and pin marked points of Dresden ring to four D pattern pieces to create circle. Continue pinning between points and sew together. Fold and press outer zigzag edge along 1/4" seam allowance toward wrong side of fabric.
  • 8. For pockets, use four A5 pieces. Fold and press along 1/4" seam allowance toward wrong side of fabric along curved edge of pocket piece. Fold and press again 1/4" from first folded edge. Sew along top edge to create finished look for pocket opening. Fold and press 1/4" seam along remaining three edges of each pocket piece toward wrong side of fabric and fold corners in diagonally. Repeat for remaining three pockets.
  • 9. Cut four letters of choice from scrap felt. Adhere felt letters to center of pockets with fabric glue; let dry. Use zigzag stitch to topstitch along center of each letter, going back over two or three times.
  • 10. Fussy cut animals from Fabric 7 with 1" border. (Note: Line below animals' feet should be straight.) With right sides together, place each animal on scraps of Fabric 3 and trace. Cut along traced line and pin pieces together.
  • 11. Sew animal shapes with right sides together using 3/4" seam allowance, leaving 1" opening at base of feet for turning. Clip corners and curves. Turn right side out with turning tool. Flatten and press. Stuff two animals with fiberfill and two with cellophane.
  • 12. For each animal, turn in 1/2" of open feet end and create straight edge. Tuck in 1/2" of one ruffle elastic end and sew closed.
  • 13. To assemble quilt, match up center of Dresden with center of 36"x36" Fabric 6 panel. With right sides facing up, pin together with curved safety pins. Continue pinning, smoothing fabric, and working your way around to edge of Dresden. Topstitch along inside zigzag edge.
  • 14. Assemble quilt layers in the following order: Dresden front, batting, 36"x36" Fabric 6 panel. Remove curved safety pins from previous step and pin again through all layers. Topstitch along inside center of circle, then both inside edges of ring, then outside zigzag edge. Smooth remaining background fabric to edges and pin with curved safety pins.
  • 15. Pin pockets to corners of quilt using photo as guide. Make sure animals can fit snuggly into each. Topstitch along three sides of each pocket.
  • 16. Remove safety pins. Sew binding to edge of quilt following manufacturer's instructions or create your own binding using Fabric 5 and own method.
  • Tip
  • 1. Unless noted otherwise, machine-sew 1/4" seam allowance when joining pieces. Start stitch at beginning and end of each stitch throughout steps. Press open or to either side after each step with iron on appropriate setting for fabric being used. Use tension and stitch length recommended for your machine and fabric.
