Pattern - Sewn Ruffled Tote

  • 1. Note: All seam allowances are 1/2" unless otherwise noted.
  • 2. Cut two 10-1/2"x18" exterior panels each from floral and striped fabrics. Cut four 10-1/2"x18" interior panels from floral fabric. Cut eight 10-1/2"x18" panels from interfacing. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse interfacing to wrong sides of all fabric panels.
  • 3. Cut four 2-1/2"x22" handle strips from floral or striped fabric. Position two strips with right sides together; machine-sew along side seams. Turn right side out; press. Machine topstitch side seam 1/4" from edge. Repeat with other handle. Set aside.
  • 4. Cut two 7"x18" strips from polka dot and one 7"x18" strip from contrasting fabric. Fold one polka dot strip lengthwise with right sides together. Machine-sew along long raw edge. Turn right side out; press. Baste stitch two lines along top edge of strip using needle and thread. Pull on bottom threads to gather ruffle. Repeat with other two strips. Arrange ruffles about 5" from top edge across one exterior fabric panel. Pin ruffles to panel, slightly overlapping one another, matching selvages with panel. Baste stitch along ruffle end selvages to secure ends to panel using needle and thread. Machine-sew along top of each ruffle to secure. Remove basting if desired.
  • 5. To assemble exterior of tote, machine-sew side panel rectangles to side seams of ruffled rectangle; press seams open. Machine-sew back panel to both side panels. With ruffles centered, match seams of front and back panels. Pin bottom selvages into place and machine-sew along bottom edge.
  • 6. Make corner gusset by folding one corner of tote to align seams; press. Measure 2-1/2" from triangle tip; draw straight line across fabric. Machine stitch across line; trim away excess fabric. Repeat on other corner. Turn right side out.
  • 7. Machine-sew interior panels together as in Step 4, omitting ruffles. Machine-sew side selvages of each rectangle together. Match front panel seams and pin bottom opening closed. Machine-sew along bottom leaving 5" opening in center seam. Make corner gussets as in Step 5.
  • 8. Pin handle strips to exterior of tote, aligning edges with front panel seam. With right sides together and selvages of handle ends and tote top matching, baste stitch handles in place using needle and thread.
  • 9. With right sides together, slide interior purse over exterior purse. Align top edges and pin; machine-sew across top. Turn purse right side out through opening left at bottom of interior. Press top edges. Machine topstitch 1/8" along edge of tote to finish.
  • 10. Condition clay with hands until soft and pliable. Press clay into largest flower mold; release. Trim excess clay. Create two buttonholes using toothpick. Position button on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in oven following manufacturer's instructions. Let cool completely.
  • 11. Print out full-size patterns. Cut six small petals, nine large petals, and 2"-diameter circle from Strawberry Dream felt. Cut 1/2"x15" strip from White felt.
  • 12. Fold white strip in half lengthwise; press. Make small cuts into fold every 1/4" along entire length of strip. With strip still folded, roll one end around clay button; adhere using glue gun. Continue rolling strip; adhere. Fold petal sides forward to overlap slightly; adhere. Repeat for all petals. Adhere large petals to outer rim of circle and small petals to inner circle, overlapping large petals. Hand-sew button to center of circle. Attach flower to purse using large safety pin.
