Basic Supplies

  • scissors, iron and pressing surface, masking tape, parchment-lined baking sheet, oven, paintbrushes, ruler, toothpick, craft knife, sewing needle with thread
  • 1. Fold raw edges of burlap panel over 1/2", then over 1/2" again. Press in place. Stitch folded edges. Fold one short side of panel down 2" to back side; press. Machine-sew along edge to make hanging pocket.
  • 2. Position flag face up on protective surface. Mask off 2" border around flag edge using tape. Paint flag Cotton Ball; let dry. Mask off 2-1/2" stripes across flag using tape. Paint stripes Canary; let dry. Remove tape. Paint monogram letter (1:1) mixture of Blue Lagoon + Turquoise Waters. Let dry completely.
  • 3. Work clay with hands until soft and pliable. Press into butterfly mold. Release clay from mold; trim away excess and smooth edges with fingers. Poke two holes in butterfly using toothpick for button. Bake button on parchment-lined baking sheet following manufacturer's instructions.
  • 4. Make floral bow with ribbon by positioning ribbon back and forth over itself in 7" zigzag pattern. Tie center together with small piece of ribbon; knot on back. Spread out loops; fluff open. Trim ends. Hand-sew bow to upper corner of flag and button to center of bow.
