Materials

  • National Nonwovens WoolFelt: White, 1/2 yd.; Black, Oakwood, 8”x12”
  • Orange/white cotton fabric, 1/2 yd.
  • Each: floral, polka dot
  • Embroidery thread: orange, black
  • Fiberfill stuffing

Tools

  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Embroidery needle
  • Disappearing ink pen

Basic Supplies

  • scissors, wooden skewer

Pattern - Owl & Fox Reading Buddies

  • Owl
  • 1. Print out full-size patterns. Cut patterns from fabric.
  • 2. Transfer eye and wing placement marks using disappearing ink pen onto front body piece. Hand-sew eyes, eyelashes, and wings in place using running stitch and black embroidery thread.
  • 3. Position body pieces together, with wrong sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin in place; machine-sew around edges using 1/4" seam allowance, leave 3" opening along bottom edge. Turn right side out through opening.
  • 4. Stuff owl with fiberfill stuffing, moving stuffing into ear tips using wooden skewer. Whipstitch opening closed using black embroidery thread.
  • Fox
  • 1. Print out full-size patterns. Cut patterns from fabric.
  • 2. Transfer belly and mask placement marks using disappearing ink pen onto front body piece. Hand-sew mask and belly in place using running stitch and orange embroidery thread. Hand-sew eyes and nose to face using running stitch and black embroidery thread.
  • 3. Attach tail accent on front tail piece using running stitch and orange embroidery thread. Position tail pieces together, with wrong sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin; machine-sew around edges using 1/4" seam allowance, leave top edge open. Turn right side out through opening; stuff with fiberfill stuffing. Whipstitch opening closed using orange embroidery thread. Attach tail to bottom edge of body.
  • 4. Position body pieces together, with wrong sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin; machine-sew around edges using 1/4" seam allowance, leaving 3" opening along bottom edge. Turn right side out through opening. Stuff fox with fiberfill stuffing, moving stuffing into ear tips using wooden skewer. Whipstitch opening closed using orange embroidery thread.
