By  Chris Malone

size: 5-3/4" tall

  • Yo-Yo Snowman Ornament
  • Closeup of Earmuff

Materials

  • Cotton fabrics: white, 8” square; green, red, orange scraps
  • White fleece, 6” square
  • Beads: black (eyes), 1/8”, two; gold, 1/8”
  • Shank button, 3/8”
  • Small twigs, 2” long, two
  • Blue/green ribbon, 3/8”, 5” length
  • Green wire, 22-gauge, 5” length
  • Gold thin cord, 17” length

Tools

  • Compass or circle template
  • Fabri-Tac Adhesive (Beacon Adhesives)
  • Needle and matching threads
  • 1. Cut the following circles: 3-1/2" (head), 4-1/2" (middle body), 5-1/2" (lower body) from white; two 2" from green (earmuffs); 2" from red (ornament); 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2" from fleece.
  • 2. Center small, medium, and large fleece circles on wrong side of corresponding white fabric circles. Pin from right side of fabric to hold.
  • 3. For each yo-yo, finger press 1/8" hem along edge while sewing a row of running stitches close to the fold. The larger the yo-yo, the larger the stitches need to be in order to pull center tight. Sew each fabric circle into a yo-yo using matching doubled thread.
  • 4. For nose, cut 7/8" orange fabric circle; sew running stitches all around without a folded hem. Place shank button in center of circle and pull stitches to cover button and gather fabric around shank. Knot and clip thread and glue button to small white yo-yo (head), pushing shank into center hole.
  • 5. Sew eyes to face.
  • 6. For earmuffs, use fingers to curl wire ends into small circles. Glue or tack wire to green yo-yo backs. Bend wire in center, as shown, and glue yo-yos to head.
  • 7. Glue head, medium and large body yo-yos together, overlapping edges as shown.
  • 8. Glue twigs to front sides of middle body yo-yo, sandwiching twig ends between fabric folds.
  • 9. For scarf, knot middle of ribbon length; glue knot to side of head.
  • 10. Sew gold bead to center of red yo-yo ornament. Cut 8" gold cord length, fold in half and knot 1-1/4" from loop. Tie cord ends in bow, trim, and glue to top front of ornament. Hang cord loop on twig arm, securing with glue on back of twig.
  • 11. Thread remaining cord in needle. Take small stitch at back of head and knot ends, leaving 4" loop for hanger.
