Sewn Luggage Tag & Laundry Bag

sizes: luggage tag, 3"x5"; laundry bag, 14"x20"

Materials

  • Cotton fabrics: orange print, 8”x20”, two, 20”x20”; white solid, 5”x20”, two; pink/yellow print, 1/4 yd.
  • Kreinik White 1/8” Ribbon, 1 yd.; yellow grosgrain, 1/4”-wide, 3/4 yd.
  • White twill tape, 1 yd.
  • Polyform: Sculpey UltraLight Clay, Premo! Sculpey White Oven-Bake Clay

Tools

  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Large-eye sewing needle and thimble
  • Buttonhole maker tool
  • Acrylic roller
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paints: Cotton Ball, Dolphin, Lamp Black, Cadmium Yellow, Mulberry; Dark Scarlet Multi-Surface Satin Paint; Duraclear Satin Varnish
  • Loew-Cornell La Corneille Golden Taklon Paintbrushes: Series 7550C Glaze/Wash 1/2”, 1”; Series 7300C Shader #2, 4, 6; Series 7000C Round #3
  • Parchment-lined baking sheet and oven
  • Fusible interfacing, 1/4 yd.

Basic Supplies

  • scissors, craft knife, toothpick, emery board, iron and pressing surface, cardstock scraps, straight pins, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Pattern - Sewn Luggage Tag & Laundry Bag

  • Luggage Tag
  • 1. Print out full-size patterns. Cut pattern pieces from cardstock.
  • 2. Condition clay in hands until soft and pliable; roll to 1/8" thickness. Trace around name insert pattern with sharp knife. Follow manufacturer's instructions to bake on parchment-lined baking sheet in oven. Let cool.
  • 3. Mix (1:1) mixture of Dark Scarlet and Mulberry; paint entire insert using glaze/wash brush. Let dry. Paint initials Cadmium Yellow using appropriate-size shader. Paint pointed edges on letters using round. Let dry. Apply varnish on insert using glaze/wash. Let dry. Set aside.
  • 4. Follow manufacturer's instructions to fuse interfacing to wrong size of fabric. Trace and cut out pattern pieces from fused fabric.
  • 5. Pin tag back pieces together with right sides facing. Machine-sew around edges, leaving bottom section open. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press.
  • 6. Press open edges under on dotted line; machine topstitch 1/8" from edges around all sides. Mark buttonhole placement; machine-sew in place. Use scissors to open hole.
  • 7. Pin tag frame pieces together with right sides facing. Machine-sew around outside edges only. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press.
  • 8. Clip tag frame inside corners as shown on pattern. Fold inside edges under on dotted line; press well. Machine topstitch 1/16" from edges around inside frame.
  • 9. Lay tag frame on tag back aligning bottom and sides. Machine topstitch sides and bottom together, leaving top edge open for insert. Slide insert into tag holder; tie ribbon through buttonhole and knot end.
  • Laundry Tag
  • 1. For buttons, roll White clay to 1/8" thickness. Measure and use craft knife to cut out seven 1-1/2"x2" rectangles. Use toothpick to poke two holes 1/2" apart at top and bottom of each rectangle. Follow manufacturer's instructions to bake buttons on parchment-lined baking sheet in oven. Let cool. File edges gently using emery board.
  • 2. Mix (10:1) mixture of Cotton Ball and Lamp Black; use this mixture to create (5:1) mixture with Dolphin. Paint sides and front of each button with mixture using #6 shader. Let dry. Paint "LAUNDRY" on each button Cotton Ball using #2 and #4 shaders. Repeat until opaque. Let dry. Set aside.
  • 3. Follow Laundry Bag Diagram to machine-sew exterior of laundry bag. Once assembled, fold end to end, with right sides together, and machine-sew side seams. Sew gussets on corners using Gusset Diagram.
  • 4. Fold interior rectangle in half, end to end, and machine-sew side seams. Make gussets on corners using Gusset Diagram.
  • 5. Slide interior of bag inside exterior of bag with wrong sides together. Match top edges of both interior and exterior bags. Fold edges over 1/2" towards exterior of bag; press. Fold over again 1-1/2"; press well.
  • 6. Beginning at center front of bag, machine-sew folded edge 1/8" away from fold. Machine-sew all way around bag making casing; stop sewing 1/2" from starting point. Thread twill tape through casing; tie into bow.
  • 7. Use large-eye needle and White ribbon to hand-sew buttons across center of white strip. Beginning with "N" on center of white strip, attach buttons 1/2" apart on either side to ensure correct placement. Knot ribbon ends on inside of bag.
