Pattern - Classic Gardening Apron

  • 1. Note: Wash fabrics without fabric softener before beginning project.
  • 2. For apron, cut 26"x29" rectangle from denim fabric. Use Fig. 1 to trim apron sides as shown.
  • 3. Using Fig. 1 as guide, cut along dashed line to remove 4" of fabric from top.
  • 4. Place removed, 4" bib onto floral fabric with right sides together. Trace around denim bib, adding 1/4" to bottom. Remove denim bib and discard.
  • 5. Cut out new floral bib. Place on denim apron, right sides together. Using 1/4" seam allowance, sew new bib to apron along longest edge only. Press seam toward denim and topstitch in place.
  • 6. For pockets, cut 8"x29" rectangle from floral fabric. Turn 1/4" under, along top 29" edge; press. Turn under another 1/4"; press. Topstitch top edge of pocket.
  • 7. Place pocket at bottom edge of apron, right sides up. Topstitch three pockets by sewing as indicated (Fig. 2).
  • 8. Baste sides and bottom edge of pockets.
  • 9. Turn all raw edges under 1/4"; press. Turn under another 1/4"; press. Trim away excess fabric where needed and clip corners before pinning.
  • 10. Topstitch along all apron edges. Set aside.
  • 11. For neck strap, cut 4-1/2"x26" strip from denim. Fold lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" along 26" raw edge. Press seam open. Turn right side out. Turn raw ends into strap 1/4"; press. Topstitch around edges of strap 1/4" from edges.
  • 12. Attach neck strap to apron with dungaree buttons. Attach one button to each pocket front.
  • 13. Cut two 32" ribbon lengths. Fold under one end of each ribbon 1/4" to attach to apron. Topstitch folded ribbon end to each side of apron at waist. Clip ribbon ends.
