Hot Tomato Apron

Materials

  • Cotton fabric: green, 42” square; white, 2-1/2 yds.
  • Embroidery floss: red; green; dark yellow; aqua

Tools

  • Embroidery hoop and needle
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Straight pins
  • Iron and pressing board

Pattern - Hot Tomato Apron

  • 1. Fold right sides of green fabric together to form 21"x42" rectangle. Sew along edges, leaving 5" opening for turning.
  • 2. Clip corners; turn right side out through opening. Hand sew opening closed.
  • 3. Sew basting stitch 2" from top, 42" edge of skirt. Pull bobbin threads to gather skirt to 21" wide. Tie off threads to secure. Set skirt aside.
  • 4. For sash, cut 6-1/2"x86" strip from white fabric. Fold in half lengthwise. Sew raw edges together, leaving one end open for turning. Clip corners; turn right side out. Hand opening closed and press.
  • 5. Place skirt, right side up, on work surface. Position sash across basting line of skirt; pin in place.
  • 6. Topstitch around sash, 1/4" from edges to secure to skirt. Set apron aside.
  • 7. For pocket, cut 6"x13-1/2" rectangle from white fabric. Fold in half to create 6"x6-3/4" rectangle. Mark fold line with pins and reopen pocket.
  • 8. Print and cut out patterns. Transfer pattern to bottom of pocket. Remove marker pins and place fabric in embroidery hoop.
  • 9. Using photo as color guide, use backstitch and satin stitch to embroider design.
  • 10. Refold right sides of pocket together. Stitch sides and bottom, leaving 3" opening for turning. Clip corners; turn right side out through opening. Hand sew opening closed.
  • 11. Position pocket on apron front. Topstitch sides and bottom to complete pocket.
