Grandparents’ Pillow

Materials

  • Fabrics: Roc-Lon White Cotton Muslin, 1/2 yd.; colorful cotton print, 1/2 yd.; Coats & Clark Black Quilting, 3/4 yd.
  • Pillow form or fiberfill stuffing
  • The Warm Co. Warm & Natural White Quilt Batting
  • Coats & Clark Notions: Black Zipper, 20”; White Thread; Black Thread

Tools

  • Westcott Titanium Bonded Quilting Scissors
  • Tulip Scribbles Fabric Markers
  • Taber Olfa Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter
  • Sewing machine with walking foot

Basic Supplies

  • straight pins, iron and pressing surface, quilter’s ruler, safety pins
  • 1. Note: Use 1/4" seam allowance throughout. Refer to diagram for pillow layout. Dimensions listed are width by height.
  • 2. Cut muslin into panels: (A) 7-1/2"x7-1/4", (B) 10"x9-1/2", (C) 11"x9-1/2" (D) 10"x4-1/4". Have child(ren) draw on center of muslin panels with fabric markers on protected surface. Let dry.
  • 3. Cut print fabric into panels: (A) 11"x1-3/4", 3"x7-1/4", 11"x2-1/2", 1-1/2"x7-1/4"; (B) 10"x1-1/2"; (D) 10"x2-3/4", 10"x3-1/2"; center strip 1-1/2"x19-1/2".
  • 4. Cut black fabric into panels: two 23"x1-1/2", two 1-1/4"x19-1/2", two 23"x23".
  • 5. Machine-sew print panels as follows: (A) 1-1/2"x7-1/4" on left side, 3"x7-1/4" on right side, 11"x1-3/4" on top, 11"x2-1/2" on bottom; (B) 10"x1-1/2" on top; (D) 10"x2-3/4" on top, 10"x3-1/2" on bottom.
  • 6. Machine-sew block A and block C together; machine-sew block B and block D together.
  • 7. Machine-sew print center strip between A/C block and B/D block.
  • 8. Machine-sew 1-1/4"x19-1/2" black strips to each side. Machine-sew 1-1/2"x23" strips to top and bottom.
  • 9. Layer black quilting fabric (right side down), batting, and patchwork top (right side up); secure with safety pins. Machine- or hand-quilt stitching around each drawn design area and also 1/4" out from each seam.
  • 10. Attach zipper onto bottom edge of pillow, with one side of zipper to quilted top and other side to black backing panel. Open zipper halfway for ease in turning. With right sides together, machine-sew remaining three sides of pillow. Turn right side out.
  • 11. Open zipper. Insert pillow form and close zipper.
