Plaid Fabric Balls

  • Plaid Fabric Balls

Materials

  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam Balls, 3”, six
  • Repurposed plaid cotton shirts, in coordinating colors
  • Buttons
  • Pearl-head pins
  • Ribbon: velvet, coordinating color

Tools

  • Low-temp glue gun and sticks

Basic Supplies

  • straight pins, scissors, wooden skewer
  • Rag Balls
  • 1. Cut three 10" squares from three different plaid shirts. Make small snips along one edge of each fabric square, about 1" apart. Rip strip of fabric by pulling apart at snipped spot, tearing fabric in straight line along threads.
  • 2. Wrap strip from one of shirts around foam ball. Pin to secure.
  • 3. Continue wrapping and pinning strips from same fabric around ball, covering all areas.
  • 4. For hanger, cut ribbon length. Secure to top of ball using pin.
  • 5. Secure button at top of ornament using pearl-head pins.
  • 6. Repeat process to make two more ornaments.
  • Tucked Fabric Balls
  • 1. Score each foam ball into quarters using wooden skewer.
  • 2. Use two plaid fabrics for each ornament. Cut fabric pieces for each scored section.
  • 3. Use wooden skewer to push fabric into grooves on each section. Use pins to secure fabric into grooves.
  • 4. Apply glue to fabric grooves using glue gun. Wrap velvet ribbon around ornament, covering fabric grooves; trim ends.
  • 5. For hanger, cut ribbon length. Secure to top of ball using pin.
  • 6. Secure button at top of ornament using pearl-head pins.
  • 7. Repeat process to make two more ornaments.
