By  Holly Craft

  • Felted Sweater Purse

  • Sweater (at least 50% wool content)
  • Wool roving: tomato; brown
  • Felt Leaves (Dimensions)
  • Brown embroidery floss
  • Buttons
  • Cardstock
  • Shrink plastic

  • Bird Die Template (Spellbinders)
  • Wizard Die Cutting & Embossing System (Spellbinders)
  • Rubber stamp (97573 Inkadinkado)
  • Copic Markers
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Oven or embossing heat gun
  • 1. To felt sweater, place in washing machine with soap and hot water. Rinse with cold water, then place in dryer. If sweater is not felted enough, repeat process.
  • 2. For purse, cut off sleeves, going straight up from side seams. Cut along seams in sleeves, opening up each sleeve into a piece of fabric. Cut each piece of fabric from sleeves down center, lengthwise. On each sleeve, sew larger end (shoulder) together to make two long pieces of fabric. Double each other over on itself and machine sew lengthwise, making a strap 1-1/2" to 2"-wide. Trim off excess. Ribbed ends will be attached to purse.
  • 3. Sew along top of ribbing that is at bottom of sweater, closing off bottom of purse. For a larger purse, turn inside-out and sew a bottom seam along very bottom of sweater, stitching approximately 1/2" from edge. The ribbing, however, makes a nice ruffle along the bottom.
  • 4. For decorative buttons, die cut birds from shrink plastic. Punch holes for button and one for bird's eye, if desired. Heat shrink plastic in oven or with a heat gun until it is correct size. Color buttons with markers. Let dry.
  • 5. Use regular buttons to sew straps to back of purse and bird buttons to sew straps to front of purse.
  • 6. Die cut bird from cardstock. Use paper left from die cut as a needle felting pattern. Place bird pattern on purse and foam block inside purse, under area to be needle felted. Place wool roving on design area and needle felt in place.
  • 7. For branches, pull and roll wool into long pieces and needle felt onto sweater. Pull, shape and add wool as needed.
  • 8. Blanket stitch felt leaves onto purse.
