Basic Supplies

  • straight pins, sewing needle, scissors, iron, pressing cloth and surface
  • 1. Wash and dry fabric. Read Avatrex Quilt Attitude package instructions. Use word processing or photo editing computer program to create two 7"x7" word art images. Print mirror image of word art images onto glossy side of two Attitude sheets. With rotary trimmer, trim away excess Attitude sheet, cropping images to 8-1/2"x8-1/2" (including margins and seam allowances).
  • 2. Use rotary cutter and 12-1/2" square ruler on cutting mat to cut two 8-1/2"x8-1/2" pieces from light purple fabric and fusible webbing. (Note: Light purple fabric goes behind Attitude words. It should be light enough for words to show.)
  • 3. Adhere fusible webbing to right side of light purple fabric following manufacturer's instructions. Position glossy (printed) side of Attitude sheet on fusible side of light purple fabric on ironing board. Cover with pressing cloth. Iron slowly and consistently with even pressure for 30-60 seconds until all areas have been covered. Remove cloth; peel away Attitude backing paper and let cool. Set aside.
  • 4. (Note: 1/4" seam allowance is included in cutting measurements.) With rotary cutter and 6"x24" ruler on cutting mat, cut from fabric: from dark purple, two 8-1/2"x8-1/2" squares and three 3"x44" strips (piping); from medium purple, one 1-1/2"x44" strip cut into two 1-1/2"x8-1/2" and one 1-1/2"x17-1/2" strips, two 3"x44" strips each cut into 3"x17-1/2" and 3"x24-1/2" strips, and two 23"x23" squares (backing).
  • 5. Refer to Pillow Diagram to sew blocks and strips together to assemble pillow top. (Note: Fabric A is light purple, Fabric B is medium purple, Fabric C is dark purple.)
  • 6. Layer muslin, batting, and pillow top on work surface. Hand- or machine-quilt as desired.
  • 7. With rotary cutter and ruler on cutting mat, trim quilted pillow top to 23"x23".
  • 8. For piping, with right sides together, sew short ends of strips to make one long strip. Press seams to one side. Lay cord down center of fabric strip and fold fabric over cord with raw edges matching. Pin in place. With zipper foot attached to machine, place piping under foot and adjust needle position as closely to cording as possible. With long stitch length, sew piping keeping seam allowance consistent. (Note: There will be about 1" seam allowance.) With scissors, trim seam allowance to 1/2"-wide.
  • 9. (Note: Sew piping to pillow top before joining together with backing layers that will enclose piping.) When attaching piping to pillow top, place raw edges together, so that cording is facing inward. Pin with edges aligned. When pinning piping to fabric, leave an extra tail of about 2"-3" at beginning and end of piping. Sew around pillow top next to piping to attach, clipping seam allowance at corners to pivot. When getting close to starting point, cut off any excess piping so you have about 1" to work with. Peel back fabric to expose cording. Trim cording so it exactly meets end of sewn-down cording. Fold under end of loose fabric to create finished edge. Lift up start of piping and wrap end of piping around, overlapping fabric about 1/2". Stitch in place, matching seam line.
  • 10. (Note: Pillow has envelope-style backing.) With one backing fabric, fold and press 7" to wrong side to make 16"x23" piece. Repeat with second piece. With right sides facing down, overlap pieces (with folds toward center) to make 23" square; baste together overlapping edges. With right sides together, place pillow top on backing (with cording sandwiched between); stitch around pillow top following previously stitched lines of piping. Turn pillow right side out; insert pillow form.
  • Tip
  • 1. If you're not intending to remove pillow form, slipstitch opening closed.
