Summer Blooms Place Setting

  • *Orange/white polka dot fabric (place mat border and backing), 1/2 yd.
  • *Off-white cotton fabric (place mat center), 1/4 yd.
  • *Orange flower print fabric (napkin), 1/2 yd.
  • *Fusible interfacing, 1/2 yd.
  • National Nonwovens Straw WoolFelt, 2”x7”
  • Polyform Premo! Sculpey Pomegranate Clay
  • Embroidery floss: red, green
  • *Note: Amount listed is for two sets; place mat and napkin


  • Sewing machine and matching thread

  • DecoArt Duraclear Satin Varnish
  • Clay-dedicated rolling pin, parchment-lined baking sheet, and oven
  • Hot glue gun and sticks

Basic Supplies

  • scissors, craft knife, sewing needle, toothpick, paintbrush, iron and pressing surface, measuring tape or ruler, transfer paper

Pattern - Summer Blooms Place Setting

  • 1. Place mat is 16"x12"; napkin is 17-1/2"x17-1/2".

  • 1. For button, condition Pomegranate clay and press in dahlia flower mold. Remove from mold and trim edges. Poke two holes on center of flower using toothpick. Repeat process, creating one more dahlia flower. Follow manufacturer's instructions to bake buttons on parchment-lined baking sheet in oven. Let cool. Apply satin varnish. Let dry and set aside.
  • 2. For each place mat, measure and cut: 8-1/2"x12-1/2" off-white fabric (center of place mat); two 17"x2-1/2" and two 8-1/2"x2-1/2" orange polka dot fabric (border strips); 12"x16" orange polka dot fabric (place mat backing); 12"x16" fusible interfacing. For each napkin, cut 18"x22" from orange flower fabric.
  • 3. With right sides together, sew all border fabric strips along edges of center of place mat. Press seams open.
  • 4. Follow manufacturer's instructions to fuse interfacing to wrong side of place mat.
  • 5. Position place mat and back of place mat with right sides together. Sew around edges taking 1/2" seam allowance and leaving 3" opening along bottom for turning. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press.
  • 6. Topstitch 1/4" along outer edges on edges of place mat. Sew 1/4" from center seam line on all edges of place mat.
  • 7. Print out pattern. Transfer embroidery pattern onto bottom right corner on center of place mat.
  • 8. Backstitch flower petals with red embroidery floss and flower stem and leaves with green embroidery floss. Hand sew button on center of flower.
  • 9. For each napkin, cut 18"x18" orange print fabric. Fold edges 1/4" to back side; press. Sew 1/8" around napkin edges to finish.
  • 10. For napkin ring, cut 2"x7" from Straw felt. Hand sew remaining clay button onto center. Overlap ends of napkin ring 1"; hand sew to secure. Slide napkin through ring.
