1. Each bug requires wire for antennas and legs. Use art wire or recycle an old heavy electrical cable. Cut away plastic coating on scrap piece of old heavy electrical cable to expose plastic coated wire.

2. For ant’s body, roll one large ball, two medium balls and one small ball from red clay. Make one pear shaped ball for ant’s head and two comma-shaped pieces for eyebrows from red clay as shown.

3. Push following clay balls together in order: large, medium, medium, small. Cut four 1½” red wires and push them into the body as shown.

4. Push clay head to top of body as shown.

5. Add flat white clay circles for eyes. Add little black pupils from black clay as shown. Place white highlight on pupil as shown.

6. Add eyebrows just above eyes. Cut two 1½” antennas from red wire and push them onto top of head as shown. Use smallest ball tool to press in nostrils and smile as shown. Bake according to manufacturer’s instructions. Let cool.

7. For hands, make two flat teardrop shapes, two ovals and two little teardrops. Put hands together as shown.

8. When ant is completely cool, bend arms half way to make elbows. Put hands onto ends of arm wires. Curl antennas with pliers. Make ovals for feet and little circles for ankles. Push unbaked feet firmly onto baking surface so it stands up while feet are baking. Bake again according to manufacturer’s instructions.

9. Allow ant to cool completely before handling.

Bumble Bee

1. For bee’s body, make big teardrop shape and thick pancake shape from yellow clay.

2. Roll long thin rope from black clay. Coil black rope around body starting at the thick end. Flatten black rope to yellow body as you go.

3. Make two large flat teardrop shapes from white clay for wings. Press wings onto back of body. Press thick pancake shape from Step 1 onto front.

4. Add flat white clay circles for eyes. Add little black pupils from black clay as shown. Put two flat yellow triangles on top of eyes for eyelids. Roll small red oval for nose and add in between eyes as shown.

5. For legs, cut six 1½” wires and push them into bumble bee. For antennas, cut two more 1½” wires and push into head.

6. Bake following manufacturer’s instructions; let cool. Bend legs down with pliers. Make six little black balls for feet and push them onto ends of leg wires.
