Swirly Santa Clay Ornament

  • Makin’s No Bake Clay: White (Makin’s Clay)
  • Pearl-Ex Pigment Powders: Pearl White; Red Russet (Jacquard)
  • Flesh tone acrylic paint
  • White craft wire, 26-gauge
  • Glass beads: black seed, two; white E, 6/0, 50
  • Pearl or white dimensional paint
  • Pink powdered blush
  • Small treat of choice


  • Makin’s Professional Tools (Makin’s Clay)
  • Craft knife
  • Glazed ceramic tile, at least 6” square
  • Small plastic or metal lid from pickle jar
  • Film canister or small circle template
  • Acrylic brayer or lucite roller
  • Adhesives: Zip Dry Paper Glue; Liquid Laminate (Beacon Adhesives)
  • Cotton-tip swab

Pattern - Swirly Santa Clay Ornament

  • 1. Follow manufacturer's instructions to condition clay. Roll and flatten some clay onto ceramic tile. Use swirl stamping point tool to stamp swirls in clay. Print and cut out pattern; use craft knife to cut out pattern. Use half round texture point to make scallops around edge of beard area.
  • 2. Use craft knife to cut 3/4"x3-1/3" clay strip for hat trim. Use wave cutter to trim all sides. Use small sphere point to make divots in hat trim. Use wave cutter to cut 2"-long moustache in same way, then cut in half. Roll large clay ball and smaller ball for hat top and nose.
  • 3. For pocket, roll and flatten 2" and 2-1/2" squares. Cut out 2" cardstock square; slightly bend to form curve. Place cardstock on top of smaller clay square. Place larger clay square on top of curved cardstock. Use craft knife to round off bottom corners. Use sphere point to press edges together on three sides. Make two small holes in top pocket ends.
  • 4. Roll and flatten small piece of clay. Use film canister or template to cut out circle. Use craft knife to cut in half for face.
  • 5. Mix one tablespoon Liquid Laminate with 1/4 tsp. White pigment powder in plastic lid; apply to beard, moustache, hat trim, and hat top.
  • 6. Mix one tablespoon Liquid Laminate with 1/4 tsp. of Red Russet; apply to hat area and pocket. When dry. Paint back of hat area with same mixture.
  • 7. Paint face and nose flesh tone.
  • 8. Cut 7" wire length. Thread one end through pocket hole; curl end. String white beads onto wire handle. Insert wire end in remaining pocket hole; twist end to secure.
  • 9. Glue pocket to back of Santa; let dry. Glue face, hat trim, hat top, nose, seed bead eyes, and moustache to Santa as shown. Use cotton-tip swab to blush cheeks and nose. Use dimensional paint to add eyebrows. Place treat inside pocket.
