Welcome to our Classroom Tree

Perfect for teachers welcoming new students this fall or have students create their name leaves as a fun back to school arts and crafts project.

  • Welcome to our Classroom Tree


  • AMACO Cloud Clay: Yellow, Red, Green
  • Corrugated cardboard, two 20" squares
  • Glue Dots Craft Glue Dots


  • Acrylic paints: green, brown
  • AMACO Acrylic Roller (or wooden dowel)
  • Metal ruler
  • Leaf cookie cutter

Basic Supplies

  • scissors, ruler, black marker, craft knife, toothpick, paintbrushes, newspaper (to cover work surface)
  • 1. Adults, help kids when using craft knife and cutting cardboard.
  • 2. On clean work surface, remove clay from packages. To condition, roll clay separately in hands until soft, bending and rolling until pliable. If clay cracks, keep conditioning. Use acrylic roller to roll clay to 1/8"-thick sheet.
  • 3. Use leaf cookie cutter (or use promo credit card) to cut leaf shapes from Yellow, Red, and Green clays. Cut one leaf for each student in class.
  • 4. Use toothpick to draw vein lines on leaves. Set leaves aside to dry.
  • 5. For tree, draw two tree shapes, including trunk and "leaves" area on cardboard squares. Use photo as guide. (Make sure bottom of trunk is straight edge for ease in standing.)
  • 6. Using photo as guide, use craft knife to cut 8" slit in top area of one tree and 8" slit in bottom area of other tree.
  • 7. On covered work surface, paint tree trunks brown and top of trees green. Let dry. Turn tree shapes over. Paint tree trunks brown and top of trees green. Let dry.
  • 8. Use black marker to write each student's name on center of each leaf. Use Glue Dots to glue leaves on tree.
  • 9. Position tree shapes together by joining shapes in cut slits.
  • Tips
  • 1. Collect freshly-fallen leaves to use as "stamps!" Press leaves in clay to create vein lines and details!
  • 2. Have an old or recycled fridge or appliance box? Create a large floor tree for classroom displays or props in school plays!
