Basic Supplies

  • scissors
  • Note
  • 1. Numbers stand for cream (1), dusty rose (2), and crimson (3) beads on Beading Chart.
  • Purse
  • 1. Following Beading Chart, begin at bottom row by threading 57 beads onto floss. To make first stitch, skip last two beads and put needle through third-last bead pulling tight. Add bead to needle, skip one bead on strand and stitch through next bead. Repeat process for width of piece.
  • 2. At end of each row, add bead and thread needle through last raised bead in previous row. Continue to add bead and sew through every other bead. When you run out of thread, sew diagonally through beaded work in zigzag line three times and trim end. To add new thread, sew three or four lines zigzag-style through existing beadwork coming out where you left off. (Note: This helps avoid knots in the beaded piece.)
  • 3. As you reach point where pattern narrows, omit last bead at end of row to reduce stitches. When you are done, thread floss through beading in zigzag pattern to secure and trim end.
  • 4. When you have beaded one side of piece, repeat to create second panel using same design.
  • 5. To finish, sew two halves together by aligning bottom edges and stitch through one bead in each panel alternately until they are joined. To sew sides together, start by stitching through beads at end of row 46 of each piece which is just before pattern begins to decrease. Sew towards bottom of bag taking one stitch through one bead at each edge of piece. Repeat to sew second side.
  • 6. To affix beaded bag to frame, wire center of each side of beadwork to frame to secure, then sew beadwork to frame. Remove wire when you're done. Trace beadwork for liner pattern. Sew three sides with right sides facing and insert into purse. Turn small hem on opening edge and stitch liner to beaded edge where it attaches to frame. To finish, make some small stitches through purse hinge and into adjacent beadwork.
  • 7. To make shoulder strap bead, take three two-yard lengths of beading thread and double them. Thread lengths with beads and then braid them together. Affix each end of braided strand to lobster clasp using crimp bead. Attach lobster clasp to purse frame to secure shoulder strap.
