In addition to sticky notes used to mask stamped images, there are specialty products designed for the purpose as well. Eclipse Tape™ is a delicately sticky art masking tape available in rolls, strips, or sheets; masks cut from it are reusable. Masquepen®, a blue masking fluid available in applicator bottles, is ideal for masking very small images; just rub off with fingers when dry. Read "Product Spotlight" this issue for great information about watercolors, too.
Gather supplies within arm’s reach. Following tool manufacturer's instructions, stamp branch and both birds onto clear stamp positioner sheet. See Fig. 1.
Stamp nest onto watercolor paper and again onto masking sheet. See Fig. 2.
Carefully cut out stamped nest from masking sheet, cutting slightly inside outline to avoid halo effect. Don't worry about cutting off fine lines. See Fig. 3.
Peel backing from mask and carefully place over stamped image on watercolor paper. Position clear stamp sheet with branch under masked nest as desired. Line up stamp positioner, remove clear sheet, and stamp branch over nest mask. See Figs. 4 and 5.
Use stamp positioner to stamp birds on branch and nest as shown in Fig. 6; be sure right bird's tail clears branch.
Following manufacturer's instructions, carefully apply masking fluid to birds and branch; use small paintbrush to spread fluid into smallest areas. Avoid masked nest. Let fluid dry completely. See Fig. 7.
Color sky with blue watercolor crayon, drawing around branch, nest, and birds. Use water brush to blend and spread color. Add more color by touching brush to crayon tip. Continue until pleased with effect. See Fig. 8. Let dry completely.
Use finger to rub off dry masking fluid. Remove tape mask and store with stamp for re-use. See Fig. 9.
Using photo and Fig. 10 as guides, color stamped image using watercolor pencils; blend colors with water brush.
