Tools

  • Circular needles, size 6 (4.0mm) or size 7 (4.5mm), 16” (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Double pointed needles, size 7 (4.5mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker

  • Gauge
  • 1. 14 sts and 22 rows = 4" on size 7 (4.5mm) needles
  • Special Stitches
  • 1. sk2p, a double decrease: Sl 1 purlwise, k2tog, pass slipped st over knit st.
  • 2. ssk, a left-leaning increase: Sl each of the next 2 sts knitwise, place them back on lefthand needle, k2tog through back loop.
  • Hat
  • 1. Note: A is 5724, B is 5723, and C is 5703 throughout.
  • 2. With A and smaller needle, cast on 72 sts. Work in k 1, p1 rib for 1-1/4". Use stitch marker to mark beg of rnd.
  • 3. Change to larger needle, k1 rnd.

  • 2. Rows 2-3: *K 5, p 3. Rep from * around.
  • 3. Row 4: *K 5, yo, sk2p, yo. Rep from * around.

  • 6. Rows 7-8: K 1, p3, * k 5, p 3. Rep from * around, k 4.

  • 9. With C, rep Rows 1-5.

  • 1. Note: Change to double pointed needles (DPN's) when work gets too small for circular needle.

  • 3. Round 2: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 6, ssk. Rep from * around. 63 sts
  • 4. Round 4: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 5, ssk. Rep from * around. 54 sts
  • 5. Round 6: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 4, ssk. Rep from * around. 45 sts
  • 6. Round 8: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 3, ssk. Rep from * around. 36 sts
  • 7. Round 10: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 2, ssk. Rep from * around. 27 sts
  • 8. Round 12: Remove marker, sl 1 st, place marker for new beg of rnd, *k 1, ssk. Rep from * around. 18 sts
  • 9. Round 14: Ssk around. 9 sts
  • 10. Round 15: K.
  • 11. Cut yarn leaving long tail. Thread tail in tapestry needle, pull needle through all nine remaining sts and pull tight to finish crown. End off. Weave in all ends.
