Crocheted Pom-Pom Scarf & Purse

Materials

  • Caron International Simply Soft: 2 skeins: Black (9727); 1 skein each: Ocean (9759), Grey Heather (9742)
  • Heavy cardboard, 12”x1-1/2” (for purse bottom)

Tools

  • Crochet hooks: size 7 (purse), size 8 (scarf)
  • Yarn needle
  • Pom-pom maker

Basic Supplies

Directions

Gauge

  • 1. In single crochet, 14 sts and 16 rows = 4”, using smaller hook. In single crochet, 13 sts and 16 rows = 4”, using larger hook.

Special Stitches

  • 1. rev sc: reverse single crochet—Work single crochet in opposite direction by inserting hook in next stitch (to right if right-handed and to left if left-handed), yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
  • 2. sc2tog: single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • 3. Note: To change color when making purse, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Fasten off old color. Proceed with new color.

Scarf

  • 1. Note: Black (A), Ocean (B), Grey Heather (C) throughout both designs.
  • 2. With larger hook and A, ch 2.
  • 3. Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn—2 sc.
  • 4. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across, turn—4 sc.
  • 5. Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn—6 sc.
  • 6. Rows 4–11: Repeat Row 3 eight times—22 sc.
  • 7. Row 12: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
  • 8. Repeat Row 12 until scarf measures about 62” from beginning.
  • 9. Next Row (decrease row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—20 sc.
  • 10. Repeat decrease row 9 times, until there are only 2 sc remaining.
  • 11. Last Row: Ch 1, sc2tog—1 sc. Fasten off.
  • 12. Finishing: Weave in ends. Block lightly, if needed.
  • 13. Pom-poms (make 8): Following pom-pom maker directions, make eight 2” pom-poms, two with A, and three each with B and C. Sew pompoms onto scarf, randomly placed near one end.

Purse

  • 1. Front: With smaller hook and B, ch 43.
  • 2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—42 sc.
  • 3. Rows 2–10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn; change to C in last sc of Row 10.
  • 4. Rows 11-20: With C, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn; change to A in last sc of Row 20.
  • 5. Rows 21–30: With A, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn; change to B in last sc of Row 30.
  • 6. Rows 31-40: With B, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn; change to C in last sc of Row 40.
  • 7. Rows 41–50: With C, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Fasten off.
  • 8. Back: Make same as Front.
  • 9. Gusset (forms sides and bottom of Purse): With smaller hook and A, ch 8.
  • 10. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—7 sc.
  • 11. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
  • 12. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 37-1/2” from beginning. Fasten off. (Note: Gusset should be long enough to be sewn onto one side edge of front, across bottom edge of front, and up other side edge of front.)
  • 13. Flap Closure: With smaller hook and A, ch 11.
  • 14. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—10 sc.
  • 15. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
  • 16. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 9” from beginning.
  • 17. Next Row (decrease row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—8 sc.
  • 18. Repeat decrease row 3 more times, until there are only 2 sc remaining.
  • 19. Last Row: Ch 1, sc2tog, ch 15, sl st in sc2tog just made (for loop)—1 sc, and 1 ch-15 loop. Fasten off.
  • 20. Finishing: Weave in ends. Block pieces lightly, if needed.
  • 21. Assembly: With RS together, pin edges of gusset onto one side edge of front, across bottom edge of front, and up other side edge of front. Working from WS and with smaller hook, join A with sl st in top corner, working through both thicknesses, sl st evenly spaced down side edge, across bottom edge, and up other side edge, joining one long edge of gusset to front. Repeat to join back to opposite edge of gusset. Turn purse right side out. Place piece of heavy cardboard inside bottom of purse (optional).
  • 22. Top Edging: With RS facing and smaller hook, join A with sl st in any top corner, to begin working across top of gusset.
  • 23. Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly spaced around top opening; join with sl st in first sc, do not turn.
  • 24. Round 2: Ch 1, rev sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first st. Do not fasten off.

Handle

  • 1. Row 1: Continuing with A, ch 1, sc in first 7 sts (work over rev sc sts into sc sts of gusset below), turn; leave remaining sts unworked.
  • 2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn—7 sc. Repeat Row 2 until handle measures 23” or desired length. Do not fasten off.
  • 3. Joining Row: Hold end of handle against 7 sts at top of gusset on other top edge of purse, working through both thicknesses (and over the rev sc sts into the sc sts of gusset), sc across to join end of handle to other side of top of purse. Fasten off.
  • 4. Attach Flap Closure: Sew short, straight edge of flap closure onto center top on back of RS just below round of rev sc.
  • 5. Pom-poms (make 4): Following pom-pom maker directions, make four 2” pom-poms, one each with A and C and two with B. Sew B pom-pom 1-1/2” from (sewn) straight edge of flap closure, A pom-pom 3” from B pom-pom, C pom-pom 3” from A pom-pom. Sew remaining B pom-pom on front of purse onto lower B stripe. Use ch-15 loop on flap closure to close purse.
