Berries on the Vine Crocheted Throw

Materials

  • Caron International Simply Soft, 3 skeins: Off White (9702); Simply Soft Party, 2 skeins each: Fuchsia Sparkle (0002), Spring Sparkle (0003)

Gauge

  • 1. One motif = 5”x5”. (Note: Gauge is not critical for this project.)

Special Stitches

  • 1. beg-cl: beginning cluster—Ch 3, yarn over, insert hook in indicated ch-space and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over, insert hook in same ch-space and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • 2. cl: cluster—Yarn over, insert hook in indicated ch-space and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; [yarn over, insert hook in same ch-space and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
  • 3. dc2tog: double crochet 2 together—[Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Special Techniques

  • 1. Join with sc—Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
  • 2. Note: Motifs are worked with RS facing at all times. Do not turn at the end of rounds. Hold piece with RS facing when joining new colors.

  • 2. With B, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
  • 3. Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring; join with sl st in first sc—8 sc.
  • 4. Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sc as join, [ch 3, sk next sc, 2 dc in next sc] 3 times, ch 3, sk next sc; join with sl st in first dc (top of beginning ch)—8 dc and 4 ch-3 sps. Fasten off B.
  • 5. Round 3: With RS facing and working behind ch-3 sp of Round 2, join A with sl st in any skipped sc of Round 1, ch 4 (counts as tr here and throughout), 2 tr in same sc as join (corner made), [sc in next 2 dc of Round 2, working behind next ch-3 sp of Round 2, 3 tr in next skipped sc of Round 1 (corner made)] 3 times, sc in next 2 dc of Round 2; join with sl st in first tr—12 tr and 8 sc. Fasten off A.
  • 6. Round 4: With RS facing, join C with sl st in back loop of center tr of any 3-tr corner, ch 2 (counts as hdc), (dc, hdc) in back loop of same tr, [hdc in next 4 sts, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next tr] 3 times, hdc in last 4 sts; join with sl st in first hdc—24 hdc and 4 dc. Fasten off C.
  • 7. Round 5: With RS facing, join A with sc in any corner dc, ch 4, sc in same dc, [sc in back loop of each of next 6 hdc, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next dc] 3 times, sc in back loop of each of last 6 hdc; join with sl st in first sc—32 sc and 4 ch-4 sps. (Note: All stitches are worked into back loops only, except at corners. The (sc, ch 4, sc) at each corner is worked into both loops.)
  • 8. Round 6: (Sl st, beg-Cl, [ch 2, Cl] 2 times) in first ch-4 sp, *ch 3, sk next 3 sc, dc2tog, ch 3, sk next 3 sc, (Cl, [ch 2, Cl] 2 times) in next ch-4 sp; repeat from * 2 more times, ch 3, sk next 3 sc, dc2tog, ch 3, sk last 3 sc; join with sl st in beg-Cl—12 clusters, 8 ch-3 sps, 8 ch-2 sps, and 4 dc2tog. Fasten off A.

Finishing

  • 1. Arrange motifs in 7 rows of 9 motifs each and whipstitch together.
  • 2. Edging: Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, join A with sc in center Cl of any corner of throw, 2 sc in same Cl, [work 13 sc evenly spaced across edge of next motif, *sc in seam between motifs, work 13 sc evenly spaced across edge of next motif; repeat from * to center Cl of next corner of throw, 3 sc in center Cl] 3 times, work 13 sc evenly spaced across edge of next motif, **sc in seam between motifs, work 13 sc evenly spaced across edge of next motif; repeat from ** to end of round; join with sl st in first sc—456 sc. Fasten off B.
  • 3. Round 2: With RS facing, join C with sl st in center sc of any 3-sc corner, ch 2 (counts as hdc), (dc, hdc) in same sc, [hdc in each sc across to center sc of next 3-sc corner, (hdc, dc, hdc) in center sc of 3-sc corner] 3 times, hdc in each hdc to end of round; join with sl st in first hdc—464 sts.
  • 4. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same hdc as join, ch 3, sk next st, *sc in next st, ch 3, sk next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—232 sc and 232 ch-3 sps. Fasten off C.
  • 5. Round 4: With RS facing and working behind the ch-3 sp, join B with sc in any skipped sc of Round 2, ch 3, *working in front of next ch-3 sp, sc in next skipped sc of Round 2, ch 3, working behind next ch-3 sp, sc in next skipped sc of Round 2, ch 3; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off B. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
