Tools

  • Diamond Tech Jennifer’s Mosaics Wheeled Glass Nippers
  • Petroleum jelly or cooking spray
  • Plastic gallon bags, two

Basic Supplies

scrap paper, pencil, craft stick, paper towels, plastic bag, mixing bowl, teaspoon, mixing spoon, measuring cup, scissors, water, sandpaper or penny, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

  • Cover work surface with newspaper. Apply thin coat of petroleum jelly or cooking spray to inner edges and bottom of mold using paper towel.

STEP 2

  • Print out full-size patterns. Trace around perimeter of mold on scrap paper using pencil to create template. Cut out butterfly pattern; center and trace on template.

STEP 3

  • Cut purple/blue glass pieces into long narrow strips for butterfly border using glass nippers. Place on template leaving 1/8” space between pieces. Follow same process to fill in body and antennae with glass. (Note: If working with children, adult can nip while child places glass on template.) Add swirl motifs with millefiori. Fill in background on template with glass and gems.

STEP 4

  • Remove 1/2 cup cement from pouch; place in plastic bag and set aside. Add remaining cement and 10 oz. water to other plastic bag; seal and mix. If too dry, add water, one teaspoon at a time, until cement is smooth and pourable. Pour cement into mold slowly, shaking and tapping mold to avoid air bubbles. See Photo 1.

STEP 5

  • Center butterfly pattern on wet cement. See Photo 2. Position background glass from template into mold, leaving 1/8” between each piece. See Photo 3. Remove pattern.

STEP 6

  • Mix 2 tsp. of Yellow Mosaic Colorant and 1 oz. water in mixing bowl. Mix until colorant dissolves. Slowly add water to reserved cement mix until frosting consistency. If too dry, add more water, one teaspoon at a time. Cut tiny corner from bag; pipe yellow cement around perimeter of butterfly. See Photo 4. Swirl and mix yellow cement in butterfly with craft stick. See Photo 5. Tap sides of mold to help settle cement.

STEP 7

  • Transfer remaining pieces of glass from template to mold, starting with butterfly perimeter, leaving 1/8” between each piece. Let sit overnight.

STEP 8

  • Remove stone from mold by turning mold over on work surface and gently lifting up on edges. Clean off any excess cement covering glass pieces using paper towel or sponge. Smooth out ridges using sandpaper or edge of penny if needed. Allow stone to cure for 24-48 hours before placing outdoors.
