Directions

Pillows

  • 1. Refer to quilt instructions to make Santa, reindeer and one of the sugarplum blocks for pillow fronts.
  • 2. For each pillow, cut a 14”x14” square from backing fabric.
  • 3. Pin pillow pieces right sides together. Sew around pillow edges using a 1/4” seam allowance, leaving an opening large enough to insert pillow form or stuffing.
  • 4. Clip corners and turn. Press.

STEP 1

  • Print and cut out patterns.

Santa Block

  • 1. Cut a 14”x14” square from green and red print and a 4-1/2”x14” rectangle from chenille.
  • 2. Base chenille onto bottom of fabric square. Use four strands of red floss to blanket stitch along top of chenille rectangle.
  • 3. Trace and cut Santa body, hat and two circles from red felt; beard, mustache and circle from white felt; face from skintone felt; boots from black felt; tree from lime green felt; tree stump from tan felt.
  • 4. Lightly dry brush cheeks with red paint. Add glitter glue and let dry.
  • 5. Use photo as guide to baste felt pieces (except tree) to pillow front.
  • 6. Use two strands of floss to blanket stitch around Santa’s body, hat and boots with white, and around beard, face and mustache with tan. Make two black French knots for eyes. Satin stitch eyebrows with white. Add three crossstitches onto each boot for buttons.
  • 7. Cut a 7-1/2” length of lime green rickrack. Baste, then stitch rickrack trim along bottom of Santa’s body. Stitch three lime green buttons onto rickrack trim.
  • 8. Sew or glue white pom-pom onto tip of hat and red pom-pom onto face for nose.
  • 9. Cut a 9-1/2” length from red/white dot ribbon. Baste, then stitch ribbon onto left side (approximately 2-1/2” from edge) using a running stitch and two strands of white floss. Trim top end of ribbon flush with fabric.
  • 10. Baste trunk and tree so it overlaps Santa and ribbon trim. Baste three felt circles, with white circle in center and red circles at top and bottom.
  • 11. Using two strands of floss, blanket stitch around tree with red and around trunk with black. Add a white running stitch around red circles and green running stitch around white circle.
  • 12. Sew white star button onto top of tree. Glue sequins onto felt circles (red sequin on white circle and silver sequins on red circles).

Reindeer Block

  • 1. Cut a 14”x14” square from green and red print and a 9”x9” square from chenille.
  • 2. Base chenille square onto center of fabric square. Use four strands of lime green floss to blanket stitch around chenille square.
  • 3. Trace and cut reindeer body, head and two legs from tan felt; two hooves from brown felt; saddle from red felt.
  • 4. Lightly dry brush cheeks with red paint. Add glitter glue and let dry.
  • 5. Cut 12” silver tinsel stem in half. Bend each piece to form an antler shape.
  • 6. Cut a 3-1/2” length from lime green rickrack. Baste, then stitch rickrack trim onto top of saddle.
  • 7. Use photo as guide to arrange reindeer pieces on chenille square. Be sure to baste head last, after antlers are glue into position and legs, body and saddle pieces are basted.
  • 8. Use two strands of floss to blanket stitch around reindeer’s body, legs and head with black and around saddle with white. Add a white running stitch around each hoof. Make two black French knots for eyes.
  • 9. Sew or glue black pom-pom nose to face.
  • 10. Glue three silver sequins to saddle.

Sugarplum Blocks (Two)

  • 1. Cut 16 5”x5” squares from assorted prints. (Note: Designer used the same combination of eight prints for the two blocks.)
  • 2. Cut two 5”x5” squares from white chenille for center blocks.
  • 3. Cut two sugarplum pieces from tan felt, two icing pieces from white felt and two cherries from red felt.
  • 4. Cut two 3-1/8” lengths from red/white dot ribbon.
  • 5. Use photo as guide to baste sugarplum pieces onto center of each chenille square.
  • 6. Use two strands of floss to blanket stitch around sugarplum with black and around icing with tan. Add a white running stitch around cherry.
  • 7. Baste, then stitch ribbon pieces onto sugarplums using a running stitch and two strands of white floss.
  • 8. Lay squares out for each block as desired, with the sugarplum square in the center of the three rows. Sew the patchwork squares together.

Assembling the Quilt

  • 1. To piece the four blocks of the quilt, place fabric pieces right sides together and sew using a 1/4” seam allowance. Use photo as placement guide.
  • 2. Sew border pieces, using 2-1/2”-wide strips.
  • 3. Cut backing fabric and batting several inches larger than finished size of quilt top (approximately 34”x34” square).
  • 4. Baste batting in between top and bottom layers of quilt with wrong sides of quilt top and backing facing. Smooth out any wrinkle on fabric and batting.
  • 5. Pin the three layers together and stitch-in-the-ditch along seams (or quilt as desired).
  • 6. Trim batting and backing fabric even with edges of quilt top.

Add Binding & Optional Hanging Sleeve

  • 1. If desired, add a hanging sleeve before or after binding quilt, depending upon your preferred technique.
  • 2. For binding, cut four 2-1/2”-wide strips along width of fabric. Sew strips right sides together with diagonal seams (at a 45° angle) into one continuous strip. Trim excess fabric, leaving a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seams open. Press binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Beginning in the middle of one side and with raw edges aligned, pin binding to quilt top. Leaving approximately 8” free (a tail) at the beginning, sew binding to quilt top using a 1/4” seam allowance. Stop stitching 1/4” from corner of quilt and backstitch. Remove quilt. Fold binding strip up at a 45° angle, away from quilt then fold it down even with raw edge of quilt. Begin stitching at fold, stitching through all layers. Continue sewing around quilt, repeating process for each corner. Bring folded edge of binding strip to back of quilt and hand stitch binding in place.
