Directions

Notes

  • 1. Use two strands of floss for all stitches, except four strands around chenille squares.
  • 2. Dotted lines on pattern templates indicate overlap of fabric pieces. Use these lines as a guide when basting fabric motifs.
  • 3. To save time, machine stitch felt and fabric appliqués using a zigzag or decorative stitch instead of hand embroidery.

Quilt

  • 1. Print and cut out patterns.
  • 2. Prepare the Blocks: Two Polka-Dot Blocks Cut two 14” squares from pink/green dot print and two 9” squares from white chenille. Baste chenille squares onto center of 14” squares. Use four strands of Lt. Avocado green floss to blanket stitch around chenille squares, and two strands of floss for all other stitches. Trace and cut two polka dots each from pink orange and green felt. Use photo as guide to baste polka dots onto chenille squares, alternating placement of dots for each block. Blanket stitch around pink dots with Dk. Orange Spice, orange dots with Lt. Topaz and green dots with Blanc.

Quilt - Ladybug Block

  • 1. Cut 14”x27-1/2” rectangle from stripe fabric. Trace and cut two ladybugs (two bodies and heads from white felt and two wings from pink felt), large flower from orange felt, circular flower center from white felt and three leaves from lime green felt. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to apply iron-on adhesive to wrong side of lime green dot fabric. Trace and cut out six spots. Remove paper backing and iron three spots onto pink ladybug’s wings. Cut four 1-1/4” pieces from lime green rickrack for antennae. Using photo as placement guide, place ladybug and flower pieces onto background block in desired position to not placement of antennae. Quick Tip: Mark placement of pieces with tiny reference points using a disappearing marking pen. Set aside felt pieces. Baste, then stitch rickrack antennae. Baste the two ladybugs, with the flower in the center, onto background fabric. (Note: Head of ladybugs should overlap bottom of antennae.) For ladybugs, blanket stitch around heads and bodies with Lt. Avocado Green, around wings with Dk. Orange Spice and around dots with Blanc. Add two Lt. Avocado Green French knots for eyes. Blanket stitch around flower with Lt. Topaz. Straight stitch around leaves with Blanc then add three running stitches along center. Add a Lt. Avocado Green running stitch around circular flower center. Sew two 1/2” pink buttons for ladybug noses and yellow button to flower center. Sew four green pompoms to tops of antennae.

Quilt - Two Patchwork Blocks

  • 1. Cut 16 5” squares from assorted prints. (Note: Designer used same combination of eight assorted prints for two blocks.) Cut two 5” squares from chenille. Trace and cut two small flowers from orange felt and two circular flower centers from white felt. Baste flowers onto center of chenille squares. Use Lt. Topaz to blanket stitch around flowers. Add a Lt. Avocado Green running stitch around flower centers. Sew 1/4” pink button to each flower center. Lay squares out for each block as desired, with chenille flower square in center. Sew patchwork squares together, using a 1/4” seam allowance.

Piece the quilt top

  • 1. Using a 1/4” seam allowance, sew the quilt top together.

Add the border

  • 1. Cut four 3” strips along the width of the fabric. Sew the side borders first using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press and trim. Sew borders to top and bottom. Press and trim.

Assemble the layers

  • 1. Cut backing fabric and batting slightly larger than the finished size of quilt top. Baste batting in between top and bottom layers of quilt with wrong sides of quilt top and backing facing. Smooth out any wrinkles on fabric and batting. Pin the three layers together, then stitch-in-the-ditch along seams or quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing fabric even with edges of quilt top.

Add the binding

  • 1. (Note: Add a hanging sleeve, if desired, before binding quilt.) Cut five 2-1/2”-wide binding strips along width of fabric. Sew strips together with diagonal seams. Trim seams to 1/4” and press open. Press binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. With raw edges of binding and quilt top even, stitch using a 3/8” seam allowance. If desired, leave anywhere from 2” to 12” free, depending on preferred binding technique. To miter binding at corners, stop stitch 3/8” from corner of quilt. Fold binding strip up, away from the quilt, then fold it down even with raw edge of quilt. Begin stitching at fold, stitching through all layers. Continue sewing around quilt, repeating same process for each corner. Bring folded edge of binding strip to back of quilt and hand sew binding in place.

Ladybug Pillow - Notes

  • 1. Use two strands of floss for all stitches.
  • 2. Dotted lines on pattern templates indicate overlap of fabric pieces. Use these lines as a guide when basting fabric motifs.
  • 3. To save time, machine stitch felt and fabric appliqués using a zigzag or decorative stitch instead of hand embroidery.

Ladybug Pillow

  • 1. Print and cut out patterns.
  • 2. Cut two 14” squares from stripe fabric.
  • 3. Refer to wall quilt instructions to add a single ladybug motif to front of one pillow piece. Add two green felt leaves and a small orange felt flower onto top left side of ladybug. (Note: Stitch flower in same way as for patchwork blocks.) Leaves are stitched in same way as quilt.
  • 4. Pin two piece pieces right sides together. Sew around edges, using a 1/4” seam allowance, leaving an opening for turning and inserting pillow form. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press. Insert pillow form of stuff firmly. Slipstitch opening closed. Quick Tip: If using pillow form, stuff corners with fiberfill.
