Holly & Berries Burlap Stocking

Basic Supplies

scissors, sewing needle, iron and pressing surface, craft knife, wax paper and newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

  • Condition Ultralight clay in hands until soft and pliable. On work surface covered with wax paper, roll 1-1/2” ball; form into egg shape. Use fingers to pinch larger end into tail shape (for bird). Sculpt smaller end into head and beak. Smooth and work out fingerprints. Cut 5” from silver wire; insert into center of bird (for hanger). Use alphabet stamps to press “peace” onto side of bird. For berries, condition Cadmium Red Hue clay in hands until soft and pliable. Roll twenty 1/8” balls and three 1” balls from clay. Flatten 1” balls into flat disc shapes. Press six or seven berries on each disc. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake bird and berries on parchment-lined baking sheet in oven. Let cool.

STEP 2

  • Twist wire ends into loop on top of bird. Tie 12” of jute twine through top of bird.

STEP 3

  • On newspaper-covered work surface, paint bird Vanilla Shake using #6 shader. Let dry. Paint bird (1:1) mixture of Pearlizing Medium + Chartreuse using glaze/wash. Let dry. Paint “peace” Brown Sugar using liner; drybrush letters using #4 shader. Let dry. Coat entire bird with varnish using glaze/wash. Let dry.

STEP 4

  • Print out patterns. Cut stocking patterns from fabric.

STEP 5

  • Position burlap stocking pieces with wrong sides together; machine-sew around front and back pieces, leaving top open, using 1/4” seam allowance.

STEP 6

  • Fold red cotton ruffle in half lengthwise; press. Baste stitch raw edge of ruffle; pull bottom thread gently to gather.

STEP 7

  • With right sides together, match raw edges of cream cotton lining pieces. Machine-sew around sides of stocking, leaving 4” opening on one side. Pin ruffle on edge of cream lining, matching raw edges; machine-sew to secure. Slide burlap stocking inside lining so outside of burlap and right side of lining are facing one another. Machine-sew along top edge. Pull stocking right side out through opening in lining.

STEP 8

  • Push lining inside burlap stocking and fold top of stocking down 4”, creating cuff. Machine-sew chenille rick rack onto seam between lining and ruffle. Machine-sew felt leaves above rick rack in pairs, overlapping bottom edges. Knot and clip thread ends.

STEP 9

  • Adhere berry discs onto top of felt leaves using fabric glue. Let dry.

STEP 10

  • Cut 8” from jute twine; fold in half and tie knot about 4” down from folded center. Hand-sew onto upper corner of cuff for hanger. Hand-sew twine holding bird to same spot so bird hangs down 6”.
