Bird's Nest Napkin Rings

Materials

  • Wooden items: napkin rings, four; Split Wren Eggs (Lara’s Crafts), 7/8”, three (per napkin ring); Forster Woodsies Medium Circles (Loew-Cornell), four
  • Fun Wire (Toner Plastics), 18-gauge: Icy Silver; Icy Blue Fizzy; Icy Copper; Marshmallow
  • Americana Acrylic Paints (DecoArt): Dried Basil Green; Soft Blue; Dark Chocolate; Light Buttermilk
  • Gingham ribbon, 7/8”

Tools

  • Tiny bird rubber stamp (Inkadinkado)
  • Black pigment ink pad
  • Pearl Ex Pigment Powders (Jacquard): Aztec Gold; Silver; Sunset Gold; Antique Copper
  • Duraclear Varnish (DecoArt)
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue (Duncan)
  • Tools: round-nose pliers; wire cutter; drill and 1/16” bit

Directions

STEP 1

  • Basecoat napkin rings and three eggs color of choice. Let dry. Mix equal parts pigment powder with varnish. Lightly apply pigment mixture to eggs. Set aside.

STEP 2

  • Use pliers to create small coil for nest center. Wrap wire until nest measures approximately 2-1/2”-wide. Cut end with wire cutters. Cut three 5” wire lengths and wrap around nest to secure. Use pliers to tuck wire ends under nest.

STEP 3

  • Drill small hole in side of each napkin ring. Cut 5” wire length to secure center of nest to napkin ring. Insert wire ends through center of nest then through napkin ring hole. Use pliers to twist ends together inside of ring. Trim excess wire.

STEP 4

  • Stamp bird on circle shapes. Glue eggs to center of nests. Cut 2” ribbon lengths. Fork ends with scissors. Glue two scraps to bottom center of nest and circle shape over ribbons.
