Mixed Media Garden Collage

Materials

  • Canvas Corp Burlap Stretched Canvas, 18”x18”
  • Canvas fabric, 1/4 yd. (cut in half, creating two pieces)
  • Fabric scraps, various sizes
  • Tea-dyed manila tags, 3” and 4”
  • Script decorative paper, 12” sheet
  • Walnut Hollow wooden letters
  • Vintage buttons, eight
  • Collage items: twigs, feather, paper flower
  • Lace, scraps
  • Ribbon, scrap
  • Embroidery floss
  • Cardboard, scrap

Tools

  • Sewing machine and cream thread
  • Embroidery needle
  • Caviling Papers & Co Birds & Nests Rubber Stamp Set
  • Jacquard Products Dye-Na-Flow: Teal, Magenta, Brass
  • Cream acrylic paint
  • The Warm Co. Steam-A-Seam fusible web, 1/2 yd.
  • Aleene’s: Quick Dry Tacky Glue, Original Tacky Glue Stick

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, pencil, newspapers (to protect work surface), iron, paintbrush

Directions

STEP 1

  • Drybrush cream paint randomly across burlap canvas. Let dry.

STEP 2

  • Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse two pieces of canvas together.

STEP 3

  • Print out pattern. Trace one large and two small tag shapes onto canvas. Cut on traced lines.

STEP 4

  • Paint canvas tags with diluted Dye-Na-Flow paint. Use one part paint to two parts water. Test paint on scrap fabric to ensure watercolor effect before painting tags. Let dry.

STEP 5

  • Machine zigzag stitch 1/4” from each edge on tags.

STEP 6

  • Trace and cut small tag shape from cardboard scrap. Drybrush cream acrylic on tag. Let dry.

STEP 7

  • Paint cardboard tag with Dye-Na-Flow as done in Step 4.

STEP 8

  • Paint manila tags with diluted Dye-Na-Flow. Let dry. Stamp tags with bird- and nature-themed stamps.

STEP 9

  • Drybrush acrylic on wooden letters. Let dry.

STEP 10

  • Wrap twig bundle with embroidery floss.

STEP 11

  • Cut tag shape from paper. Referring to photo, machine stitch paper tag and square to canvas tags.

STEP 12

  • Following manufacturer’s instructions, apply fusible web to fabric pieces. Fuse fabric on burlap canvas.

STEP 13

  • Referring to photo, assemble collage pieces (buttons, ribbon, SEEDS, feather, lace, twigs, tags) on burlap canvas. Secure pieces with tacky glue and hand stitches.

Tips

  • 1. Use tacky glue stick applied to center of fabric or paper (do not sew through) to hold in place before sewing.
  • 2. Embroidery floss can be custom dyed with Dye-Na-Flow. Simply dilute paint, dip floss, and let dry.
